HousforYs winning streak ends
Browns make Oilers blue
United Press International
CLEVELAND — Larry Moriarty
was lucky. After the Houston run
ning back ran into the Cleveland de
fense and had to be carried off on a
stretcher, subsequent X-rays proved
negative.
Unfortunately, everything else
the Oilers did Sunday also proved
negative and X-rays were not
needed to evaluate the damage.
“When it happened, I felt like I
was dying,” Moriarty said. “Even
though I’m think I’m OK, thank
God, I still feel lousy inside. The
numbing sensation from the
pinched nerve is going away, but not
the emptiness. The Browns just
dominated — period.”
Paul McDonald threw three
touchdowns passes, two of them to
rookie wide receiver Brian Brennan
and the Cleveland defense stifled
the Houston offense in pacing the
Browns to a 27-10 victory over the
Oilers at Cleveland Stadium.
The decision raised the Browns’
record to 4-9 overall and 3-2 under
interim Head Coach Marty Schot-
tenheimer. The 27 points were the
most Cleveland’s offense has scored
this season.

“We controlled both lines of
scrimmage,” Schottenheimer said.
“Our offense, our defense, our spe
cial teams — they all were excellent.
The reason? Attitude. We’re playing
like winners because we’re thinking
like winners.”
“Cleveland is a very active team,
using all their assets,” said Oilers’
coach Hugh Campbell. “They really
beat on us. There was some hesi
tation on our part, and I think the
Browns sensed that.”
With the score tied 7-7 at the end
of the first quarter, Matt Bahr broke
the tie with a 18-yard field goal at
4:23 of the second quarter. Houston
got the ball back, but not for long.
Cleveland defensive end Keith Bald
win tipped a Warren Moon pass in
tended for Carl Roaches, and cor-
nerback Hanford Dixon intercepted
at the Houston 45-yard line and re
turned it to the 36.
Six plays later, McDonald tossed a
12-yard pass to veteran tight end Oz-
zie Newsome, who danced around
cornerback Willie Tullis and stum
bled into the endzone at 8:32. Bahr
added the conversion to make it 17-
7.
Again, Houston gave the ball back
on a Moon interception, his 10th of
the season. Linebacker Tom Cous-
ineau tipped a pass and safety A1
Gross intercepted at his 37 and ran
47 yards to the Houston 16. Bahr
then kicked a 28-yard field goal at
13:09 that gave Cleveland a 20-7
halftime advantage.
The third quarter was scoreless,
although Houston linebacker Robert
Brazile intercepted McDonald for

Sea hawk head — missing in action
United Press International
DENVER — Denver Bronco Karl
Mecklenburg ruffled a few feathers
by ripping the head off a stuffed sea-
hawk during a pep rally at the
Denver Museum of Natural History,
last Friday.
Last Friday’s rally was leading up
to Denver’s key NFL game Sunday
against the Seattle Seahawks. The
Broncos lost 27-24.
Mecklenburg, a defensive utility
player, was presented a stuffed sea-
hawk. He promptly tore into it and
sent feathers dying.
“He wasn’t quite supposed to do
that,” a chagrined museum spokes
man said. “He was just supposed to
demonstrate a dead bird.”
The bird’s head briedy was lost in
the crowd of about 300 fans.
