United Press International MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Michael Landreneaux, father of a 4-year-old leukemia victim kidnapped from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital last month, surrendered to police but did not reveal his son’s wherea bouts. Landreneaux, 28, was charged Monday by the Shelby County Sher iffs Department with kidnapping a child under 6. The Marshall resident and his for mer wife, Debra Landreneaux, of Smithville, Okla., were sought by au thorities since Brett Landreneaux was taken from the hospital in the early morning hours of Oct. 12. Doctors said the child had a staph infection that would be fatal if it were not treated within 48 hours. An attorney who accompanied Landreneaux to the Criminal Justice Center Monday night said the boy had received medical treatment out side Shelby County. Attorney Robert Friedman said Landreneaux wanted to “turn him self in, face the charges against him, and clear his name.” “We feel Mr. Landreneaux has a legal defense to any charge that may be filed against him,” Friedman said. Another attorney. Will Heaton, said Landreneaux’s wife would sur render “when the time is appropri ate.” “I can only say they were seeking the best medical attention for the child, and Mr. Landreneaux was and is primarily concerned with the child’s best interests,” Heaton said. Hospital officials said the boy was admitted to St. Jude Oct. 9 on refer ral from a Texas doctor. The par ents objected to the boy’s treatment on religous grounds, but no specifics have been released about their be liefs. Juvenile Court in Memphis was given legal custody of the boy in the wake of the kidnapping.
