Research
(continued from page 1)
The University will receive almost
$30 million in federal research
funds from the National Science
Foundation for the project every
year for 10 years.
A&M’s research park is not some
thing that will develop overnight —
or even over the course of a couple
of years.
The first research park based as
part of a university was at Stanford
University in California.
The park was started in 1951 and,
after more than 30 years, led to the
development of the famed high-tech
silicon valley, home of some of the
country’s largest computer firms.
Since then, 27 such parks have
been started, most of them failures.
An Ohio State University study
finished three years ago showed that
six of the parks were successful, 16
were failures, and five were some
where in between.
With these odds, A&M officials
decided first to thoroughly research
their idea.
“When A&M wanted to start their
park, they came and looked at
Utah’s,” Money said.
Money said the University admin
istrators wanted to see how a success
ful park was planned, managed and
developed.
The park is part of the Universi
ty’s Target 2000 plan.
Target 2000 is a long-term set of
goals, set up for the University by
the Board of Regents in 1981, that
strives for A&M to reach world-uni
versity status by the turn of the cen
tury.
The plan’s general report, re
leased in May 1983, outlines some
objectives on the University’s re
search :
“Recommendations:
• The Board of Regents should
develop a formal policy favoring in
creased ties between the private sec
tor and should vigorously support
efforts to make suen linkages an op
erating reality.
• Efforts should be supported to
attract high technology industries
and businesses to the areas sur
rounding the system campuses.
• Offices and activities of the sys
tem should be established in re
search parks and in other appropri
ate locations throughout the state
where linkages with the private sec
tor can be facilitated.
Rationale:
• The system can benefit as much
from the teaching, research and
service capabilities of the private sec
tor as the private sector can benefit
from the teaching, research and
service capabilities of the system.
• Lost federal dollars for re
search and other activities are not
likely to be made up completely by
the Legislature.
• There is reasonable compatibil
ity between the objectives of the sys
tem and the objectives of private sec
tor entities.”
Money has described the research
park as a symbiotic endeavor.
The business community can ben
efit by using the University’s facili
ties and experts, and the University
can benefit from, for one thing, the
financial resources of the private in
dustries.
A&M faculty can benefit by work
ing with the companies as consul
tants. Students can benefit by doing
work there while in school as well as
being provided with post-graduate
job opportunities.
The local community can benefit
because of the employment oppor-
tunites that would open up with the
arrival of private businesses — the
research park in Utah employed
morp than 3,000 people.
