Dear Joet
I applaud your courageous decision to seek election to
Congress from the sixth congressional district of Texas.
I believe thst we will be working from a position of
strength this year, and candidates like you will enable us
to translate that strength into victories in the House of
Representatives.
I am tremendously encouraged by the direction that
this country is taking and the progress that has been made
toward economic recovery. If we are to reach our final
goal, sustained recovery throughout America, we need
leaders like you in the House. We need representatives
who will provide foresight, wisdom, and courage.
In the next several months you and I will be asking
the American people for their vote. Their answer will
indicate whether we continue the policies that are
bringing change in America or whether we revert to the
failed policies of‘the past. I am confident that your
record of leadership and service to your community and
State will provide you the winning margin on election day.
I look forward to working with
Sincerely,
Ronald Reaga

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Ar
kansas coach Ken Hatfield Sunday
didn’t sound like a man whose team
had come three yards from an upset
of the nation’s No. 3 college football
team.
The Razorbacks trailed, 24-3, to
Texas at Austin early in the fourth
quarter, but scored two touchdowns
and almost came up with a third on
the game’s last play in the 24-18 loss,
“In that environment, with a sell
out crowd, bad conditions and five
turnovers in the first half, we could
have been blown out,” Hatfield said.
“But our players didn’t give up.
That’s the spirit we’ve been trying to
capture as a coaching staff.
“One of the big reasons an athlete
comes to Arkansas is to play in this
game. We played as a fighting,
scrapping team the whole game.”
For three quarters, most of the
77,809 fans at Memorial Stadium
didn’t know or care if it was a blow
out. Arkansas senior quarterback
Brad Taylor failed to complete a
pass until the fourth quarter, while
the Longhorns, led by safety Jerry
Gray, picked off four Taylor passes.
The Hogs and Longhorns each
finished with six turnovers on a day
that began rainy and ended in sun
shine.
“In the first half, our game plan
just didn’t work,” Hatfield said at
Fayetteville. “We couldn’t maintain
our blocks. They really played our
passes well. Twice in the first half we
had their cornerbacks beaten deep
and Jerry Gray came out of nowhere
to make interceptions.”
In the second half, the Hogs were
able to change their pass patterns to
crossing routes because the heat and
humidity slowed the Texas pass
rush, Hatfield said.
After Texas’ final score, a 23-yard
Jeff Ward field goal with 13:36 left,
“We only ran two plays the rest of
the day that we had practiced (last
week,” Hatfield said.

Arkansas Coach Ken Hatfield
In the final 13:36, Taylor hit 14 of
22 passes for 201 yards, with seven
of those, including a 54-yard scoring
play, going to sophomore James Shi-
best.
“We had some great individual ef
forts in the fourth quarter,” Hatfield
said.
The Arkansas defense aided the
comeback by forcing two turnovers
— a Terry Orr fumble as he leaped
for an apparent touchdown. The
fumble, which led to a 99-yard scor
ing drive, and an interception by Na
than Jones after the Razorbacks cut
the lead to 24-18.
“To win the Southwest Confer
ence, you have to have great de
fense,” Hatfield said. “No one has
ever come into this league and won a
championship with offense, and it
won’t be any different this year.
Texas has a great defense.”
After the interception, Taylor
marched the Hogs to the Texas 13
with 1:16 left. Hatfield then called a
pass for halfback Bobby Joe Ed
monds, who, Hatfield said, was
tackled as he left the line of scrim
mage. Arkansas was penalized for
clipping, with the 20-yard penalty
pushing the Hogs back to the 33.
“Instead of Texas getting penal
ized, they took us away from our
game plan,” Hatfield said.
A pass interference penalty on
Texas gave the Hogs new life at the
23, and they picked up a first down
at the 12 on a pass and a run. A false
start penalty and a delay call sent Ar
kansas back to the 22.
“On the next to last play, Marshall
Foreman was open,” Hatfield said,
“but they rushed Brad and he
couldn’t gel him the ball.”
After offsetting penalties on the
play that exhausted the final six sec
onds, Arkansas got one play with ze
roes on the clock.
“If Brad could have stepped into
the pocket and hit Jamie Lueders on
the run, he would have scored,” Hat
field said. “He was rushed and was
going backwards and had to float the
ball.”
Tony Tillmon and John Hagy
dragged Lueders down at about the
3, preserving Texas’ 4-0-1 record, 2-
0 in the Southwest Conference. Ar
kansas fell to 3-2-1 and 1-2 in the
league.

ST. LOUIS — Neil O’Donoghue,
who earlier missed a game-tying ex
tra point and a 40-yard field goal,
kicked a 21-yard field goal with
three seconds remaining to lift the
St. Louis Cardinals to a 26-24 victory
Sunday over the Washington
Redskins.
The winning drive started on the
Cardinals 33 with 2:18 left in the
game. St. Louis ground out 59 yards
in 10 plays with the key play coming
on a 20-yard pass from Neil Lomax
to Pat Tilley that left the Cardinals
on the Washington 8.
Lomax quickly passed out of
bounds to stop the clock at 5 sec
onds. After an offside penalty
against Washington moved the ball
to the 4, O’Donoghue nailed the
game-winner.
The winning kick redeemed the
Cardinals place kicker for missing an
earlier game-tying extra point that
followed an 83-yard scoring bomb to
Roy Green with 11:51 left in the
game.
O’Donoghue then missed on a 40-
yard field goal with 2:53 left and
that appeared to erase all of the Car
dinals chances for victory.
But the St. Louis defense stopped
the Redskins without a first down,
forcing a punt. Lomax then engi
neered the final drive.
The win raised the Cardinals sea
son record to 5-3 and snapped
Washington’s 5-game winning
streak, dropping the Redskins also
to 5-3 in the NFC East Division.
Lomax engineered two scoring
drives and the Cardinals’ defense
held Washington to just 113 yards in
the first half for a 10-7 lead.
St. Louis jumped to a quick 7-0
lead after Danny Pittman returned
the opening kickoff 43 yards to the
Cardinal 48. Four plays later, Lomax
hit Green up the middle between
three defenders for a 38-yard scor
ing strike. O’Donoghue added the
extra point with 12:35 showing.
St. Louis took a 10-7 lead in the
second quarter aided by a roughing
the punter penalty against Charles
Mann. The Cardinals moved 52
yards before the drive stalled and
settled for a 29-yard-field goal by
O’Donoghue with 10:17 left before
halftime.
The Cardinals’ defense sacked
Theismann four times in the first
half, the last one coming just before
intermission with Washington in
scoring position. The Redskins had
moved from their own 48 to the St.
Louis 5. On first-and-goal, Theis
mann was sacked by blitzing safety
Lee Nelson and fumbled the the ball
away to linebacker Kurt Allerman.
