Reception tonight
honors Rep. Lewis

A reception and fundraiser for
State Representative Neely Lewis,
incumbent Democratic candidate for
the 14th District, will be held tonight
at 7 p.m. in the Ramada Inn.
For a contribution of $ 10 or more,
supporters will have the opportunity
to mingle with several state officials.
Among those expected to attend are
Speaker of the House Gib Lewis,
Chairman of Ways and Means Com
mittee Stan Schlueter, Land Com
missioner Gary Mauro and state
Senator Kent Caperton.
Lewis’ campaign manager, Harley
Spoon, said the event will be open to
the public and “University students
are more than welcome.”
Lewis is running against Republi
can Richard Smith, a land developer
and Texas A&M graduate. The race
began when Gov. Mark White called
for a special election to fill the seat
vacated by retiring representative
Bill Presnal earlier this year. Lewis
edged out his opponent for the 14th
District seat by 29 votes.
During his short term in office,
Lewis, an attorney, found that a pro
posal to raise the state tuition rates
had failed to meet required approval
of the Higher Education Committee
even though the Ways and Means
Committee had approved it. As a re
sult, proposed tuition changes are
still on hold, and awaiting further
committee hearings.
Lewis also teamed up with Sen
ator Caperton to revise the taxing
formula in the state education bill to
turn a one million dollar loss of reve
nue into a two million dollar gain for
the Bryan and College Station school
districts.
