Scott Cummings, a senior, health education major from Aleif.has the chance to talk to Sherrill every month. Cummings is the student rep resentative to the Texas A&M Uni versity Athletic Council. The council makes recommendations to Presi dent Vandiver about the varsity ath letic program. “1 have several responsibilities,” Cummings said, “but the most im portant part of my job is to voice stu dents’ views to the council.” The athletic council is responsible for sending a delegate — a faculty representative from the council — to meetings of the NCAA, Southwest Conference and the College Football Association. In addition to Sherrill, Associate Athletic Director John David Crow and other members of the Athletic Department staff usually attend the meetings, Cummings said. “They report on academics, tele vision contracts, facilities and the NCAA and SWC. We use the infor mation they (the Athletic Depart ment staff) give us to make our deci sions.” Dr. Tom Adair, chairman of the athletic council, said, “The council discusses issues that will come before the NCAA, SWC or College Football Association. The appropriate rep resentative meets with Vandiver and, together, they decide how the University will vote.” Cummings said he wondered if the faculty on the council would lis ten to his views. “I was real nervous at first, but they listen and encourage me to let them know how the students feel,” Cummings said. “John David Crow asked me to help think of ways to im prove student enthusiasm about spring sports. We’ve been looking into the possibility of having an All University Night the first night of the spring semester.” ig with E leaders Koldus, the yell leaders and the band, trying to improve partici pation in spring sports,” Crow said. “We don’t want to break any tradi tions or cause any problems. “I just can’t understand why, with 18,000 to 22,000 students attending every football game, we can’t even get 2,000 to attend a basketball game.” Rozier wants Oilers United Press International HOUSTON — The agent for Heisman Trophy winner Mike Ro zier says now that the running back has reached an agreement to buy out his contract with the USFL’s Pitts burgh Maulers and join the Houston Oilers. However, Oilers general manager Ladd Herzeg said he does not want to resume talks with Rozier until the season is over. “We’re not interested in Mike Ro zier this season, but we will be willing to talk after the season,” Herzeg said. Agent Art Wilkinson said if the Oilers won’t sign Rozier this season, he wants Houston to trade his rights to another team. “I can’t let Mike sit out a full sea son,” he said Wednesday. “I didn’t break my butt on this deal to have him sit out for 18 months. “Mike wants to play for the Oilers. We still feel Houston is the best place for him.” If Houston won’t sign Rozier and refuses to trade his rights, Wilkinson says he has two alternatives. “We can consider an action against the NFL supplemental draft,” he said. “We feel there’s a good chance the courts would de clare Mike a free agent in the NFL. “Mike also might consider staying in the USFL but with another team. He will not return to the Maulers, but if they merge with another team, he might consider playing for the other team.” Houston Gamblers general man ager Gene Burrough says the Maul ers are one of five USFL teams to ap proach the Gamblers about the possibility of a merger. The Oilers own Rozier’s NFL rights and attempted to sign him earlier this season, but Rozier was not able to buy out of his contract with the Maulers. Rozier, who won the Heisman at Nebraska last year, signed a $3.1 million personal-services contract with Maulers’ owner Edward DeBar- tolo Sr. “After a number of recent serious discussions with the Maulers, Mike has an agreement in principle to be relieved of his contractual obliga tions,” Wilkinson said.
