HOUSTON — Five United States
Football League teams have ap-
proched the Houston Gamblers
about the possibilty of a merger,
general manager Gene Burrough
said Wednesday.
Burrough, who said he is not op
posed to a merger, identified the
teams as the Washington Federals,
Chicago Blitz, Arizona Wranglers,
Pittsburgh Maulers and New Or
leans Breakers.
“Certainly having some new
money in here would help us to sus
tain the team to entertain the fans,”
Burrough said.
However, the general manager
was concerned over the possibility
only 30 players could be protected
from both clubs in a merger.
“I’m opposed to having to freeze
30 players,” he said. “I’d rather
freeze 40. I have better backup play
ers on my team than most teams
have starters. We’ve worked hard to
build this team and that would flush
out the nucleus of our team.”
The Gamblers are weak finan
cially, but are seen as a strong team
in three other areas. Houston had
the best television ratings of any
USFL team this season, drew well at
the gate and is a winning team.
“Everyone wants us, we’re the
prettiest girl at the dance,” club Pres
ident Jerry Argovitz said of the
merger talks.
Any consolidation would result in
a team remaining in Houston, he
said.
“I’ve had five clubs come to me,”
Argovitz said. “We have some op
tions. We could leave Houston and
merge somewhere else. But as long
as our fans support us, we wouldn’t
leave.”

Kuhn takes third strike

George Heddleston, general man

“1 don’t know anything about it at
this time,” when asked of the possi
bility of a merger with Houston.
Even if he wasn’t, he’d have no

League Baseball’s commissioner is

hang in one of the foyers only a few
feet outside his office.
The paintings are of all the com
missioners who served before him,
Kenesaw M. Landis, A.B. “Happy”
Chandler, Ford Frick and William
D. Eckert, and not only is there a
special space reserved for Kuhn’s
portrait but the metal hook on which
his likeness will be hung already is in
the wall.
“They put it up while I was still
fighting,” he laughs.
Peter Ueberroth, the new com
missioner, is finished warming up in
the bullpen. Fresh from that miracle
he worked at the Olympics by having
them show a $150 million profit, he
takes over a job that could turn out
to be even tougher on Oct. I, next
Monday. That’s when he moves into
his new 17th floor office on Park
Avenue.
Kuhn won’t be there to greet him.
He has done that already. More than
once. Technically, Kuhn is still com-

How it works.
Major technical company presentations
will be transmitted to 30 U.S. campus communities
from a satellite 23,000 miles up. You’ll watch
their presentations live and in full color. A repre
sentative from each company will talk about '

each company’s presentation, you may ask
questions and see and hear the answers.
What companies are
participating.
Among the companies telecasting live to
your campus are Sperry Computer Systems
(formerly Sperry UNIYAC) including all domestic
operating units, nine divisions of Tektronix, Inc.,
five groups of Combustion Engineering, Inc.,
the Federal Aviation Administration and three
operations of the National Security Agency. There
will also be a special presentation, “Space

management, math, physics and all other technical
degrees. Admission is free. High achievers and
above average grades are welcome. And no regis
tration is required.
In addition to the company presentations,
question and answer periods and featured speak
ers, there will be special door prizes including
BPI-SOURCE T-shirts, TL Scientific Calculators
and a surprise Grand Prize. We’ll also have
