WEP Miners buried—enter the Cyclones
By TONY CORNETT
Sports Writer
It’s a fact that Texas A&M Foot-
Iball Coach Jackie Sherrill is not as
[distressed about the way the Aggies
[played against UTEP as many Ag-
[gie-watchers would think. It’s all
I part of the plan.
The three idle weeks that the Ag-
[gies have had since their 20-17 win
[over the Miners have been the me-
jdium for a culture of “goal post” car-
|toons, newspaper articles and re
marks by disgruntled fans who
wanted to see a crushing Aggie win
in that first game. In their season
opener, the Aggies were fortunate
enough to have the left upright de
flect the Miners’ game-tying Field
goal attempt
But none of this seems to have'
worn on Sherrill, who maintains that
ten years down the road, it’s the win
in the column and not the score in
the box that will tell the story.
So, once and for all, why didn’t
the Aggies splatter the Miners like
everybody wanted and expected
them to?
“I didn’t feel like that was best for
our football team early in the sea
son,” said Sherrill, “If you’re playing
a game like that (UTEP), you ought
to win it the hard way beacuse the
games coming down the road are
games you better be able to play.
Games that you’re going to play
down the road aren’t games that
you’re going to go out there and go
80 yards in three plays in.”
Aggie quarterback Kevin Murray
executed just such a drive against
the Miners.
It helps to understand the attitude
that the Coach Sherrill and the Ag
gies have been working with.
“I think the approach to the first
game was the same that they (the
players) had,” said Sherrill, “We
were going to open up (the season)
— we were going to play — and we
were really going to open our season
this week. I think that they ap
proached it the same way mentally.”
The UTEP game is now history.
So as far as the Aggies are con
cerned, the Iowa State game is the
season opener.
This Saturday, when Kevin Mur
ray trots out on the field to lead the
offense, he’ll be under different or
ders from Sherrill. He’ll be turned
loose.
“We’re going to be a lot more
reckless,” said Sherrill, “Like (Penn
State Head Coach Joe) Paterno put
it, ‘We’re going to put in some of
those fancy plays.’ ”
But, against the Cyclones, the Ag
gies are still going to stay with their
plan to play many players.
Still, if the Ags do win, and turn
ing Murray loose is really the key,
don’t look for a bloodthirsty maroon
and white. There will not be any in
tent to run up the score against the
Cyclones.
As Sherrill put it, “We’re not
going to be going out to see if we can
smash them.”
