HOUSTON — Denny Walling
tripled, singled and scored the win
ning run Monday night, leading the
Houston Astros to a 5-3 victory over
the San Francisco Giants.
Joe Niekro (15-10) went 6 2/3 in
nings for the victory, allowing all
three runs on Five hits while walking
three and striking out three. Bill
Dawley went the final 2 1/3 innings
to record his fifth save of the year.
San Francisco’s Chili Davis went 0-
for-4, snapping an 18-game hitting
streak.
The Giants broke on top 1-0 in
the second inning when Scot
Thompson led off with a walk, ad
vanced to second on a grounder and
scored on a single to center by Fran
Mullins.
The Astros took a 2-1 lead in the
second off starter Mark Grant (1-4).
Glenn Davis walked and Kevin Bass
beat out an infield hit. Alan Ashby
singled to right, scoring Davis, and
Bass went to third and scored on a
sacrifice fly by Craig Reynolds.
The Giants tied it 3-3 in the
fourth off Niekro after two men
were out. Thompson singled to cen
ter and advanced to second on a wild
pitch. Alejandro Sanchez had an in
field single, stole second and both
runners scored on a single to center
by Mullins.
The Astros took a 4-3 lead in the
fifth off Grant when Walling led off
with a triple to right-center and
scored on a wild pitch. Bass hit a
leadoff homer to left field in the
eighth off Gary Lavelle to give the
Astros a 5-3 lead.
A’s 5, Rangers 3
OAKLAND, Calif. — Dave King-
man hit a two-run homer in the sixth
inning Monday night to lead the
Oakland A’s to a 5-3 victory over the
Texas Rangers.
Kingman hit the first pitch from
Mike Mason (9-13) over the left-field
fence for his 35th homer, following
a walk to Joe Morgan, to give Oak
land a 3-1 lead. Dwayne Murphy
then doubled, moved to third on a
grounder and scored on Bill Al-
Rangers’ Larry Parrish
mon’s sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.
The home run was the 377th of
Kingman’s career, tying him witk
Norm Cash for 25th place on thei
time list. Kingman also increased hit
season RBI total to 117, tying hin
with Reggie Jackson (in 1973) for
second place on the A’s all-time Ik
