But it did. For three terrifying hours Aug. 31, the Stones lay bound face down in the hot desert sands outside San Luis Potosi, Mexico, waiting to die at the hands of men who claimed to be federal police. Freda Rusteberg Stone, 53, re members the clicking of their assail ants’ rifle bolts as the men repeat edly threatened to kill them. “Everytime we uttered a word or moved, they would tell us ‘Callese, no se muevan, no hablen (Be quiet, don’t move, don’t speak).’ We had no hope of getting out of there. We knew we were dead,” Bobby Stone, 57, said. “We made our peace. Freda had said some prayers and I even said some prayers.” “We did have peace. We put our selves in God’s hands,” Freda said. “We said our goodbyes. We thought now they were going to do it. But they didn’t.” Enroute to San Miguel de Allende to visit Freda’s mother and bring her home, the couple was on a deserted stretch of highway 50 miles outside the city of San Luis Potosi when a car full of men pulled alongside of their van. One man flashed a badge at the Stones, identified himself as 2i fed eral policeman and told them to pull over. Every man in the car carried M-l carbine rifles, Bobby said. Bobby, a 23-year veteran of the Border Patrol who speaks fluent Spanish and has traveled extensively in Mexico, said by all appearances the men were plainclothes federal police. Once the Stones pulled over, the men said they wanted to search the van for drugs. Within seconds they were in the van and had the couple face down on the floor and covered with clothing, Bobby said. The men took the couple’s money and jewelry. With one of the assailants driving, the van pulled off the highway into the desert. Bobby estimates they had traveled about a mile, when tramsmission problems forced the van to stop. T he men forced Bobby out of the van. He was made to lie face down in the sand and his arms and legs were bound behind him. The men then covered him with brush. His wife was held in the van and was physi cally assaulted. “They kept my wife there at the van,” Bobby said. “Then after about a half hodr they brought her over, pushed her down next to me and tied her up next to me. He kept say ing, ‘If you move, I am going to kill you.’ Naturally I didn’t move. “I said to one of them as he was walking away, ‘God go with you,’and I thought, if you can shoot me after that just go right ahead," Freda said. Once mey were sure the men had gone, Freda used her teeth to untie her husband and both made their way through the thick brush to the highway. Several trucks stopped to lend assistance, and at just that mo ment a “Green Angel” tourist police car arrived at the scene. Former policeman gets plea bargain United Press International SAN ANTONIO — A former po liceman Tuesday pleaded guilty to drug distribution charges in a plea bargain agreement with federal prosecutors. Paul Lopez, 38, pleaded guilty to three counts of a 26-count indict ment charging him with conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine and marijuana. U.S. Judge H.F. “Hippo” Garcia agreed to drop the remaining counts against the former patrolman and granted Lopez’ request that he be sentenced to no more than 25 years in prison. The maximum penalty on the three counts is 35 years. Another defendant in the case, Raul Hector Martinez, pleaded guilty to two counts of drug distnbu- tion charges. A third defendant, for mer policeman Able Hernandez, is reportedly discussing a separate plea bargain with government prosecu tors. Lopez, Martinez, Hernandez and four of Lopez’ brothers were in dicted earlier this year on charge they ran a drug trafficking ring. The officers involved also were charged with giving police protection to other drug dealers. Lopez’ four brothers, all of whom pleaded guilty in the case, and Mar tinez were scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 24. A third police officer, Jesus Gon zalez, pleaded guilty to conspiraq and distribution charges Murder charges filed in death of blind man United Press International SAN ANTONIO — Police Tues day filed capital murder charges against a suspect in the beating death of a 62-year-old blind man — a crime that prompted Mayor Henry Cisneros to pledge a crackdown in the city’s “junkie heavens.” Homicide Lt. Jack Summey said Christopher Medrano, 30, was ar rested at his home just after mid night Tuesday and charged with capital murder in the death of Al bert Johnson, 62. Medrano was be ing held on a $250,000 bond. Johnson, who was blind, was robbed of a radio and beaten with his own cane Sept. 1 as he sat on the front porch of an abandoned house in east San Antonio. He was treated at Medical Center hosptial but found dead in his home three days after he was released. Medical Examiner Dr. Vincent Di- Maio said Johnson died of a skull fracture and a blood clot in the brain. The crime angered Cisneros, who toured the eastside neighborhood last weekend and declared that he wanted to find the “punks” who killed Johnson and “wring their necks.” In a letter to City Manager Lou Fox, Police Chief Charles Rodrigue and other city officials, Cisneros said he would appeal to Johnson’s neigh bors, who he claimed knew the iden tity of the killer, if police did not make a quick arrest. ^Illlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllji | Thurs., Sept. 13 7:30 6t 10:00 | 701 Rudder $1.00 SiifiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiHiiiii^ UNIT Sup STUD Moi the^ ALPH Nil Rue PRE-I Dea Sch TRAD p.m erm amef hav: busi AGGI tion due LAMB a st foot SWAN TEXA i 302 MEXL mee TEXA in 2 cepi CAP A the BIOC1 Hee AUDI* at it corn TAMl ARLII in 4' TAMl HIC der.
