drops slightly, DWI arrests declinfe
United Press International
AUSTIN — Declines in murders,
robberies, aggravated assaults and
burglaries dropped the Texas crime
rate down 3.7 percent in the first
half of 1984, the Department of
Public Safety reported Monday.
Texas’ crime rate for the period
of January-June 1984 stood at
2,879.8 crimes per 100,000 people,
compared to a rate of 2,989.7 per
100,000 Texans during the same pe
riod one year ago. The number of
actual crimes dropped by 1 percent
to 452,825.
“Murders were down 8.2 percent,
robbery cases dropped almost 10
percent, aggravated assaults de
clined by almost 4 percent, and bur
glaries were down 5.1 percent," said
DPS Director Col. Jim Adams.
Drug arrests, which are not calcu
lated in the overall crime rate, were
up 16.6 percent. Drunk driving ar
rests declined 7 percent with 66,959
DWI arrests in tne first half of 1984
compared to 71,972 for the first six
months of last year.
Adams said the decline in DWI ar
rests indicated more people are
obeying laws.
“Hopefully, the iturea*
