ATTENTION HORSE OWNERS
Dr. Kirk Brown, president of the
Brazos Valley chapter of Mothers
Against Drunk Drivers (MADD),
said 44,000 people were killed in the
United States in 1983 in alcohol re
lated accidents. He said the figure
was over 51,000 for 1982.

Brown said he hopes rehabilita

Dr. Gerald Vinson is one of four
Texas A&M professors certified to
teach the alcohol education class in
Brazos County. He has guided 250
people through the program in the
last year and has been a traffic safety
instructor since 1965.
Vinson said the course is broken
down into four sessions:
—Introduction and the break
down of hostilities
—Effects of alcohol on the driving
task
—Problem drinking and alcohol
ism
—Personal action to avoid further
DWI behavior
The TCA certified Brazos Coun
ty’s program in June 1983. Classes
began two months later for offend
ers referred by Brazos County
Courts.

Vinson said approximately half of
the program’s participants are Texas
A&M students convicted of DWI of
fenses.
“With school in session again, I
expect to see an increase in our en
rollment of college students,” he
said.
Interviews are held at the end of
the class program to evaluate the
student’s progress and determine if
further counseling is necessary.
As its primary goal, the program
seeks to prevent persons convicted
of DWI from becoming repeat of
fenders, Vinson said.
“It is a realistic approach in which
our courts and community can fol
low through with doing something
about this very serious social prob
lem -— the drinking driver,” he said.
