Sheriff candidate Hill promises to fight vice By JAMES WALKER 'me for Its i Staff Writer .mic inti*; ••• . , . . , . „ h< vikI Rapid population growth in Bra zos County nas caused a number of , . crime problems associated with ur- 0 *l\ till.i i • ban environments, lo counteract . such vices Democratic candidate for W e | n J ; Sheriff, Howard Hill, in a news con ference Thursday, declared a “war on drugs” and “pledged to attempt to abolish prostitution in the south end of the county.” He said that he considers drug abuse the primary cause of crime in the nation. To combat illegal drugs he; called for rigorous law enforce ment through the use of undercover deputies and better cooperation with other law enforcement agencies in Brazos County and the Narcotics Task Force. However, Hill said, “ed ucation is the only way we will elimi nate the illegal use of drugs.” If elected he said he plans to con tinue lecturing in the public schools on drug and alcohol abuse, as he did while working in the Bryan Police Dept. While discussing how he would deal with prostitution, Hill com mended the efforts of law enforce ment officers over the last six- months and indicated that he also would use other available means, but refused to discuss them. Hill also placed importance on the implementation of: a 24-hour patrol consisting of three, 8-hour shifts, a program upgrading the sheriffs re serve, a 911 emergency telephone number for the county, a central dis patch location to reduce officer’s re sponse time, and a computer system for storage of all warrant informa tion available to all law officers in the county. To heighten community involve ment and public awareness, Hill pro poses a volunteer cadet program for young people interested in law en forcement. Use of reserve police of ficer has already saved Bryan resi dents $30,000 worth of man-hours. Hill believes cadets would also save taxpayer’s money. Cadets could as sist in communications during peak traffic hours and provide valuable clerical assistance. Hill has been involved in civic ac tivities, as a P.T.A. president, both a defensive driving and first-aid in structor, and an organizer of Brazos County United Way.
