"Best Bets" — a local entertainment information column — will
be a regular feature of At Ease. It'll probably always be on page
four or five, and aside from providing names, times, dates and
places of bands and other entertainment-related events that hap
pen around here, from time to time there will be information on
events in Dallas, Houston and Austin (just in case the urge to em
bark on a road trip should strike).
Le Cabaret
This jazz club is the newest club in town, and offers live enter
tainment on weekends and occasionally during the week.
Tonight Houston group Jazz Plus will perform and Saturday
Metropolis will play. Both shows will begin around 9 p.m. The
club is located on Welbom Road north of University Drive. For
more information call 846-1427.
Dr. G's
Located on South College, this club offers a little bit of every
thing. Acts over the summer have included everything from reg
gae to punk to rockabilly to folk music and just about everything
in between. The club sells beer and wine — no hard liquor — but
does provide set-ups for those who bring their own bottles.
Here's this week's calendar:
Tonight — I-Tex and the Frontier Dove Boys. Made up of two
former members of reggae group the Lotions, this new group
plays "country reggae."
Saturday — Rockabilly group Four Hams on Rye. This band
— increasingly popular in the area — is a hometown group that
includes a couple of Texas A&M students.
Sunday — Zeitgeist. Billed as "psychadelic hard-core punks
from Austin," this group makes their last Texas stop at Dr. G's
before taking off on a tour of the East Coast.
Monday — Legendary Blues Band. Rhythm & Blues. Glance
down at the story under this column for more info.
Tuesday — Company Sea. No music — this is strictly for
grins. A group of local comedians who perform skits. This week's
topic is "Son of Q-Drops."
Wednesday — Dance Attack with Deanna. No live music.
Deanna plays disc jockey while the floor is open for dancing.
Thursday — Killer Bees. Another reggae group. From Austin.

Boogie-woogie blues
band bops by Bryan
Superlatives aren't uncom
mon around here. And Aggies
are pretty accustomed to the
biggest, best, and top of the
line. Well, The Legendary Blues
Band, touting a pretentious but
deserved title, is bringing its
legend to Dr. G's on September
10.
Willie Bennett of Dr. G's said
the band is the biggest show
planned for the fall. Advanced
tickets are $7.50.
The famous "PineTop Per
kins," 70-year-old lead pianist,
has been named by critics as
"the last of the barrelhouse boo
gie-woogie stylists."
Calvin "Fuzz" Jones, bassist-
vocalist, and Willie "Big Eyes"
Smith, drummer, are not only
tight in their musicianship but
New B/CS radio station offers
top forty, fewer commercials
By DENA L. BROWN
Staff Writer
Tired of hearing too many
commercials on the radio?
KKYS (Kiss) 105, a new radio
station in the Bryan-College
Station area, believes in playing
fewer commercials.
Program Director Skip Bishop
says the commercial load for the
station is half of the other sta
tions in town, tying in with his
own philosophy of playing less
commercials.
Bishop says that the Bryan-
College Station area is a good
market for radio because it is
growing.
KKYS 105 plays a "progres
sive contemporary hits format,"
Bishop says, combining top
forty songs with the biggest
smashes like Madonna, Prince,
and Tina Turner. The station
never plays hard-core rock
groups.
Before starting the station, he
says, a lifestyle survey was
taken to study the market.
The least satisfied age group
in the area was female, aged 22
to 49, so the station has targeted
the market as 18 to 49 year-old
males and females with a lean
ing toward the females.
KKYS is owned by Broadcast
Properties, which owns six ra
dio stations, four in Texas and
two in Florida.
Bishop and one of the disc
jockeys, Dr. Lou, come from a
station in Panama City, Fla.
Music Director Chris Bailey,
who selects the records that go
on the play list, comes from At
lanta and Florida.
The station's call letters add
to its promotability.
So far, KKYS has sponsored a
"Wet KKYS" contest where wa
ter balloons were dropped on
contestant's heads. If the con
testants caught the balloons,
they won a chance to try for a
trip to Padre Island.
The contest, which had a
$1.05 entry fee, benefited the
Muscular Dystrophy Associa
tion.
The station's next contest is a
"KKYS for Cash" contest. The
first "KKYS for Cash" contest
will be held tonight at Scandals.
Contestants will kiss their
partners for one minute and
five seconds. The audience will
decide who wins by their re
sponse to each couple's efforts.
Winners will receive $105.
The next contest will be held
at Malibu Beach Club on Friday,
Sept. 14.
Winners of the "KKYS for
Cash" contest will go on to a
"Night of the Lips" contest
where they can win $1,005.
