The Texas high school football
season — a mammoth and tradi
tional enterprise that features more
than 1,000 teams playing more than
5,000 games over the course of the
autumn — opens this weekend with
the bi-annual redistricting process
expected to play a key role through
out the state.
Every other year the University
Interscholastic League moves teams
around in the five state classifica
tions because of increases or de
creases in enrollment. The
movement of a school either up or
down in class can have a dramatic af
fect on the school’s chances of cap
turing a district championship.
Dozens of schools found them
selves changing class this season,
with some of the more critical altera
tions involving the normally talented
football programs of Willowridge,
Gregory-Portland and Vernon.
But for the vast majority of
schools, the simple playing of the
games is the main thing since in
many cases throughout rural Texas,
the Friday night ritual of high school
football is one of the top attractions
of the year.
Scattered opening games were
played Thursday night in the larger
metropolitan areas, but the vast ma
jority of action will take place Friday
evening.
Converse-Judson (Class 5A), Bay
City (Class 4A), Daingerfield (Class
3A), Boyd (Class 2A) and Knox City
(Class 1A) will be defending their
state titles and Bay City and Daing
erfield enter the season favored to
do so.
Judson is given little chance of re
peating in the big-city classification,
which will absorb a number of for
mer Class 4A teams. Houston Mad
ison is among the favorites along the
Gulf Coast; Odessa Permian is the
preseason pick in the football hotbed
of West Texas; Longview is a popu
lar choice from the eastern portion
of the state; and Highland Park is
being touted among the Dallas-Fort
Worth schools.
Willowridge, a traditional Class
4A powerhouse, has been moved
into Class 5A and will likely suf fer as
a result.
The opposite could be true for
Gregory-Portland, which was
dropped from 5A to 4A and could
become an instant threat in its new
classification. But Gregory-Portland
will have to deal with Bay City, which
overwhelmed its five playoff oppo
nents last year by 153 points.

Oilers-Colts: Pass versus Ru
United Press International
HOUSTON — Following the
Houston Oilers’ 24-14 loss to the Los
Angeles Raiders, coach Hugh
Campbell admitted the offensive
game plan was conservative by de-
sign.
Against the Indianapolis Colts,
though, the offense should open up
to the style expected by Houston
fans when quarterback Warren
Moon was signed. Moon passed for
more than 5,000 yards in each of his
last two seasons in the Canadian
Football League.
“They (the Raiders) can do so
much with their corners that it frees
other defensive backs to double
cover you over the middle. We felt
we had to establish a running game
to have any shot at being able to pass
on them,” Campbell said.
“We still passed the ball (29) times.
A lot of teams don’t throw it that
many times,” he said.
The Colls, who play the Oilers in
the Astrodome Sunday, have a
young defensive secondary that
should stay busy against Moon, said
Indianapolis coach Frank Kush.
“He’s a great athlete, an elusive
and accurate passer,” said Kush,
who watched Moon play in the CFL
while he was a coach for the Hamil
ton Tiger-Cats.
“It’s an offense geared around a
coach (Campbell, another CFL vet
eran) and a player (Moon). You’ll see
a great deal of passing, although
they have some good running
backs.”
Earl Campbell, who saw litde ac
tion in the preseason while he recu
perated from arthoscopic knee sur
gery, rushed for 92 yards in the
season opener.
