INDIANAPOLIS — “Big Daddy”
Don Garlits won his first National
Hot Rod Association event since
1979 Monday, capturing the Top
Fuel title in the $1 million 30th U.S.
Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway
Park.
Garlits, 52, Ocala, Fla., beat Con
nie Kalitta, Ypsilanti, Mich., in the fi
nals of the 16-car race with a quar
ter-mile clocking of 5.52 seconds at
259.36 miles per hour. Kalitta fol
lowed in 5.69 seconds at 250 mph.
For Garlits, one of drag racing’s
biggest legends, it was his sixth U.S.'
Nationals title and his 22nd NHRA
career victory. Garlits won his fist
Nationals title in 1964 and added
victories in 1967, ’68, ’75, ’78.
Garlits is the oldest driver ever to
win an NHRA event.
“This is my greatest victory be
cause of my age,” Garlits said. “I’m
not supposed to be able to do this.”
