Bosco to
throw B.C.

Robbie Bosco makes his debut
Saturday as the successor to Steve
Young ... and Jim McMahon ... and
Marc Wilson ... and Gifford Nielsen.
It would be an upset if Bosco
didn’t pass for at least 3,000 yards
and 25 touchdowns this year as Brig
ham Young’s next quarterback, then
goon to a pro career. At least, that’s
what his four predecessors have
done.
“People automatically think a
BYU quarterback will end up in the
pros, but the quarterbacks here have
worked hard and have deserved
what they got,” said Bosco, who
leads BYU against seventh-ranked
Pittsburgh Saturday.
The Panthers vow to make Bos-
co’s debut a rough one, although
they are wary of the pass-happy
Cougars.
“It only took me one day of watch
ing the film to know my job isn’t
going to be easy,” said Pitt’s Bill
Fralic, a 6-foot-5, 285-pound offen
sive tackle so good at his job he is
considered a legitimate candidate to
become the first interior lineman to
win the Heisman Trophy.
“It isn’t going to be an easy game.
It’s going to be a tough game. No
body on this team is overconfident.”
Pitt has quarterback John Con-
gemi back, along with standout re
ceiver Bill Wallace. The Panthers are
once again considered among the
East’s elite and some feel they have
enough talent to be national champs.
“Whether we will be or not we’ll
find out,” Fralic said. “Right now,
there probably are 20 teams in the
country that are in position to say
that they could be awesome.”
BYU will be without starting de
fensive tackle Shawn Knight, who
cracked a bone in his ankle and will
miss at least the first two games.
Pitt suffered only one major in
jury during training camp. Senior
tight end (dint Wilson suffered a
stress fracture in his foot and will be
sidelined for at least a month.
Fralic suffered a concussion late
in camp, but is expected to start Sat
urday.
In other games involving Top 20
teams Saturday, No. 4 Miami meets
No. 18 Florida, No. 8 Clemson hosts
Appalachian State and No. 20 Bos
ton College hosts Western Carolina.
At Tampa, Fla., the defending
champion Hurricanes scored a 20-
18 victory over top-ranked Auburn
last Monday, and now look forward
to avenging their lone defeat of last
season.
Despite a coaching change that
saw Jimmy Johnson succeed How
ard Schnellenberger, Miami is far
more settled than it was before a 28-
3 loss to the Gators in last year’s
opener. Going into the 1983 season,
the Hurricanes pinned their hopes
on an untested freshman quar
terback named Bernie Kosar.
Now Kosar is one of the most
feared passers in the nation.
“We were apprehensive when we
£ ed Florida last year,” Miami of-
ive tackle Dave Heffernan said.
“Now the apprehensiveness is gone.
We know we can play ball. Our con
fidence snowballed last year.”
Florida must overcome an uncer
tain quarterback and coaching pic
ture. Charlie Pell, who announced
his resignation effective at the end of
this season, still isn’t sure who will ul
timately replace Wayne Peace.
At Boston, Doug Flutie enters his
senior year with the Eagles with high
expectations. Many fans feel Flutie
will challenge for the Heisman after
passing for 7,125 yards in his first
three season. The 5-9 Flutie is also
among the nation’s most exciting
players and is sure to give Western
Carolina fits with his scrambling.
Oilers sign
Kennedy for
final spot

HOUSTON — The Houston Oil
ers Thursday picked up strong
safety Mike Kennedy off waivers
from the Buffalo Bills, filling the
dub’s final roster position.
Kennedy, 25, played his rookie
season last year for Buffalo, starting
in seven games. He was drafted by
the Bills out of the University of To
ledo, cut and then resigned after
four games.
He intercepted one pass last year
and returned it 22 yards for a touch
down. He also was credited with 59
tackles.
The 6-foot, 195-pound Kennedy
is expected to play a backup role at
safety and play on the Oilers’ special
teams.
Kennedy fills the Oilers’ 49th po
sition on the roster. The team had
held the place open, hoping to sign
running back Mike Rozier of the
Pittsburgh Maulers. Rozier, how
ever, could not reach an agreement
with the U.S. Football League club to
release him from a three-year, $3.1
million contract.
