Prompted by the Muscular
hy Association, the mayors
Bryan and College Station have
ftignated Aug. 27 through Sept. 2
irefighter Appreciation Week.
■ Almost since MDA’s inception (in
pO), firefighters have been our
supporting group,” said
MpA Program Coordinator Diane
Maxwell last week.
fl am pleased that the mayors and
city councils recognize the efforts
forth by the firefighters of our
cities and that the Muscular Dystro-
y Association has joined in sup
ping this very worthwhile event,”
id Steve Aldrich, president of the
MDA Brazos Community Coordi
nating Committee. “The firefighters
pave been a group in both Bryan
d College Station that have been
vary helpful in fundraising activities
for MDA.”
sat
Maxwell said that local firefight
ers’ Fill the Boot fund drive raised
nearly $3,200 last year. MDA serves
60 families in the Brazos Valley, and
nearly 80 percent of the money
raised last year was spent on patient
care, she said.
Sept. 1-2 will mark the fifth year
of the firefighters’ Fill the Boot
drive. About 35 firefighters from
Bryan will solicit donations, and the
same number of College Station fire
fighters are expected to participate.
“I know that there’s a lot of en
ergy with the guys who are out there
doing it,” Maxwell said. “They want
to beat last year’s total.”
Saturday and Sunday, firefighters
will be at shopping centers and malls
in Bryan and College Station, en
couraging people to fill the boot.
“That weekend is a very big retail
one (when parents buy school sup-
plies for their children), and fire
lighters are basically asking, ‘Can we
keep the change for Muscular
Dystrophy?’” Aldrich said.
“That’s the way we’ve been doing
it for the last couple of years, and it’s
been working real well,” said College
Station Fire Chief Doug Landau.
He added that off-duty firemen
will be collecting donations so there
will be no cut in the city’s protection.
After collecting donations for
MDA, firefighters will present the
organization with a check on the
Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon.
They also will take call-in donations
at the telethon, Maxwell said.
“Firefighters and the MDA are
kind of in the same business,” Max
well said. “Our business is to save
lives. We just go about it a little dif
ferently. (This week) has just been
set asiae for folks to recognize fire
men.”
Bryan firefighter Nick Pappas
said firefighters work hard, and he
believed the appreciation week was a
good idea.
