He’s shown all the signs of being a tremendous football play er.” Last year’s starting center, senior Matt Darwin (6-5, 258,Houston), will move to right guard for ’84, leaving freshman Matt Wilson (6-5, 261, Spring) and senior Joe Velasquez (6- 3, 253, Houston) to battle for the startingjob. “Matt (Wilson) is a young offen sive lineman who’s got a lot of talent and he showed some promise early in spring,” Ruel said. “Joe Velasquez is a senior who’s got some experi ence and is just a tough young man. He’s got more game experience be cause he’s been our long snapper on punts.” With Darwin making the move to right guard, Ruel is confident Dar win should be able to excel at his new position. “It (the position change) frees Matt (Darwin) up,” Ruel said. “Matt was an excellent center, in fact, he was recognized as one of the better centers in the league. But this change will prove to the rest of the league what kind of player he is.” Darwin is no stranger to the of fensive line. In his four years at A&M, he’s played every position possible and Ruel jokingly admits tha that kind of experience could be an asset even after Darwin grad uates. “When he (Darwin) gets finished his senior year, I’m going to let him become a coach,” Ruel said. Also on the offensive line, return ing starters Ken Reeves (6-6, 270, Pittsburg) and Nate Steadman (6-5, 264, Houston) will swap positions, with Reeves moving to left tackle and Steadman moving to guard. According to Ruel, Aggie Assis tant Coach George Pugh has made the tight end position one of A&M’s strong points with the development of players like sophomore Duncan Webb, red-shirt freshman Sylvester Morgan, senior Mark Lewis and All- SWC performer Rich Siler. “Mark has shown some greatness in games,” he said. “Before he got hurt, he proved to us he could play. He’s got good speed, good size and good hands. That’s everything you’re looking for in a tight end.” On defense, all the Ags wanted to find d aring spring camp were three linebackers to fill the vacancies left by Billy Cannon, Jeff Paine and Jerry Bullitt. Texas A&M Defensive Coordian- tor R.C. Slocum knows his lineback ers may be inexperieced, hut he’s satisfied with their results in fall camp. “I’ve been extremely pleased with the way those changes worked out,” Slocum said. “They’re showing a lot of promise, but I’ll say at this stage because we haven’t played those SALE ENDS SEPTEMBER 3RD ■ a Stainless Steel Master I i Combination Lock With 3 Foot Vinyl Covered Chain Heavy Duty Shelf Bracket \ v « For 8x10 Lumber 20 Gallon Trash Can of galvanized steel is built to last.
