Texas A&M Defensive Coordinator R.C. Slocum, shown here“
during workouts Friday night in a wet Kyle Field, says he’s
pleased with the position changes the Aggies made in an ef
fort to strengthen the linebacking corps for the 1984 season.

Texas A&M Head Football Coach
Jackie Sherrill and his staff have
made some key positional switches
during fall workouts to help
strengthen the linebacking corps
and offensive line — two serious
question marks that raised their ugly
heads after spring practice.
Why were changes neccessary
along the Aggies’ offensive front?
Texas A&M Offensive Coordina
tor Pat Ruel said the Ags were
looking for the right combination of
players.
“We’re trying to maneuver our
personnel around to put the best
five up there,” Ruel said. “We’re
looking for some cohesiveness. We
think we’ve got a pretty good front
line now, but we’re still trying to de
velop some depth.
The Aggies lost All-Southwest
Conference tackle Tommy Robison
who graduated, but the Ags didn’t
take long to Find a replacement. Ju
nior transfer Doug Williams (6-6,
278, Cincinnati, Ohio) appears to be
ready to fill the right tackle positon
vacated by Robison.
Just because Williams will start for
Aggies for the first time, doesn’t
mean he’s inexperienced. Williams,
who along with Pittsburgh’s All-
American tackle Bill Fralic were two
of the most sought after lineman out
of high school, started as a freshman
at Kentucky before transferring to
A&M last season.
Although ineligble to play for the
Ags in ’83, Williams still practiced
with the team and, according to
some Aggie assistant coaches, helped
make A&M’s All-America defensive
end candidate Ray Childress a better
player.
Williams is by no means a shoo-in
to become an All-American or even
All-SWC, but Coach Ruel believes
Williams is well on the way to achiev
ing those goals.
