becomes. Some problems could ex
pand exponentially. Millions of
processors would be needed to work
them.
Even if the problems hindering
the fifth generation make the out
look less bright, future applications
of today’s tecnnology shine out.
“Computers are a tremendous de
vice for learning math, music and lo
gic,” says Dr. Jonn Hoyle of the Col
lege of Education.
“Computers will be a great help to
classroom teachers. Ninety percent
of all children can learn class materi
als if they are given enough time to
work witn them. The computer will
give them that time. By having a
computer in the classroom and at
home, students could take the
amount of time they need to make
sure they learn basic information be
fore they are advanced.”
Education in inner cities could be
improved by having computers at
work stations. By having computers
at various places, such as in a neigh
borhood, all children — even those
too poor to afford computers — can
have access to a computer. And
adults also will be able to use the
computers for finding jobs, figuring
income taxes or finding places to
shop. But the computer advantages
do have drawbacks.
“We risk becoming a Pac-Man
generation and interacting with
computers only,” Hoyle says. “We
may create a society that is isolated
from human relations.”
A family resource specialist here
agrees that there is a risk of being
consumed by the computer. Mary
Tc

Nance, who works for the Texas Af

members are willing to shareornot|
“The future computer can bet

could lead to a situations where ok
child stays on a computer to anei
cess.”
Another area for future compute
use is as a household appliance ‘
don’t expect to call home for aeon-
puter-cooked roast. Nance doesm
see future houses controlled by com
puters.
“I’m not sure that people wanttt
take themselves out of control in tk
house and let electronic controk
take over,” she says. “The trendno>
is putting micro-processor technd
ogy on individual appliances,instek
having a single computer controllk
all the appliances.”
Another person studying curreit
trends to predict the future is Di
Larry Hickman, who teaches a
losophy course here on technolop
and human values. He believesthr
future computers will contribuii

One example would be with “ei

world countries. The program
