Page 6/The BattalionTTuesday, July 31,1984 Murderer siouch confesses to slaying By Jim Eai ^ United Press International Scott repeatedly has professed in nocence, admitting he was at the convenience store at about the time of the slaying but claiming he only had stopped there to use an outdoor telephone to call his mother. Scott’s lawyer, John W. Hall Jr. of Little Rock, said he expected a deci sion on a new trial from Judge An- nabelle Davis Clinton in about three weeks. •Lucas, wearing handcuffs on the witness stand, calmly outlined the details he recalled of the conve nience store slaying. He said he and his “running companion,” who later was identified by prosecutors and by Lucas as Ottis Elwood Toole, en tered the store and attempted to rob it. Thornton, who had stooped be hind the checkout stand trying to put money in a box, was shot in the back, Lucas said, adding he could not recall who did the actual shoot- ing. Lucas, who has been sentenced to execution for one slaying in Texas, faces two life terms and has at least 26 other charges pending against him, said he routinely killed the peo ple he robbed: “Usually, we make sure a victim is dead before we leave.” Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Chris Piazza repeatedly questioned Lucas about discrepancies in his tes timony. Lt. Fred Hensley of the Little Rock police later testified Lucas’s de scription of the convenience store and its surroundings were wrong on several points. He also said the ac tual time of the slaying was about 4:20 p.m., while Lucas testified it oc curred between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Piazza also attempted to show that Lucas could not have been in Arkan sas Nov. 6, 1981, because the receipt from a car insurance policy pur chased by him in Florida was dated that day. As far as anybody else being charged with that. I’m sorry.” Prosecutors, however, attempted to discredit Lucas’s story, pointing out several discrepancies in his testi mony and previous statements given to authorities since he began confes sing to his crime spree more than a year ago. Lucas testified in a Pulaski County Circuit Court hearing on a new trial for Scotty Scott, 24, of Hensley, a re tired state trooper’s son who was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison for the shooting death of clerk Betty Thornton. A study by the National Food Processors Association and the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows that the level of nutrients in fresh, frozen or canned vegetables are nearly comparable, says Mary K. Sweeten. Researchers compared prepared fresh, frozen and canned lima beans, peas, spinach, sweet potatoes, car rots and squash for levels of thirteen minerals, eight vitamins and fiber, she explains. The study shows very little differ ence in the vitamin A content of any of the products. In the case of peas and spinach, the canned product was even a little higher in vitamin A than the fresh produce. Analysis also showed very little difference in minerals and fiber con tent between fresh, frozen and canned samples, says the nutrition ist. Sweeten attributes the compara ble vitamin and mineral levels to the fact that the vegetables are pre served in cans within hours of har vest. “Vitamin A is very light sensi- : compel i Monday live, and can be destroyed | artificial light or sunlight, and v min C can be lost by heat and e sure to air,” she notes.
