Parents who look to summer
camp for help in raising their young
sters will find rich resources in
Bryan-College Station, says Dr. Do
lores Stegehn, a home economist
with the Texas A&M University Ag
ricultural Extension Service.
“This community really has a lot
to offer,” Stegelin says. Besides the
Hill Country and Piney Woods
camps associated with churches, 4-H
Clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts,
day camps of various kinds give local
children the chance to learn and
grow while having fun.
Among the local day camps being
offered this summer are:
• Athletic camps organized by
Debbie Lightsey of Texas A&M at G.
Rollie White Coliseum (845-0713).
These one-week camps, for boys and
girls 8 to 18, focus on single sports
such as tennis, basketball, football,
baseball, softball and swimming. A
special two-week camp covers a vari
ety of sports.
• College Station Parks and Rec
reation camps run in conjunction
with the College Station schools. Par
ents may call trie Community Educa
tion Office at 696-3820 to sign up
children 6 to 12 for a $15, four-weex
session of skating, swimming, arts
and crafts, foot races, cook-outs, bas
ket-shooting and disk-throwing con
tests, and Walt Disney movies.
• Nature camps put on by the
Brazos Valley Museum (779-2195) at
the Brazos Center. These programs
introduce 3 to 12-year-olds to the
world of natural history through na
ture walks and indoor presentations
and activities. The children, divided
into several age groups, study dino
saurs, fossils, birds, beasts, woodlore
and Indian crafts. Cartoons and
popcorn also are on the program.
• Computer camps run by Cji
thia Scanland at Young Electron!
(693-8080). In this growing pp
gram, children 6 to 17 learn cm
puter basics in hands-on sessions!
video display terminals.
Day camps differ from sumrac
camps in that their programs don
include overnight lodging and the
activities consequently are in ao
around town. But both summerai
day camps have children in supc
vised groups, learning new skil
picking up new ideas and meeiinj
new people. If selected withdueon
for tne child’s interests, needs an
desires, camp can be a valuable ait
memorable experience.
Summer camp is also a good plat
for children to cut the apron strin[
a bit, Stegelin says. She adds, ho*
ever, that staying overnight withij
friend, spending a few days with;
favorite relative, or attending a dn
camp may serve that purpose as wd
Those activities are a good prepart
tion for summer camp, she poine
out.
Stegelin is a specialist in childdf |
velopment, but her interest in camj
is more than professional. Her
year-old son, Stephen, attendedtk
College Station Parks and Rem
ation day camp as well as Camp Ad
venture, the two-week outdooractii
ities program put on in June
Texas A&M’s Department ofPhys
cal Education.
Stegelin recommends both pro
grams highly.
Stephen graduated to summe
camp this year. He has just returntt
from the Boy Scouts’ Lost Pine
Camp at Bastrop.
“He really liked it,” Stegelinsayr
“They had a lot of planned activities
and he earned some merit
He’s a new Scout, and this waste
first Boy Scout camp.”
Tourist bit by shark
United Press International
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — An
18-year-old tourist was severely bit
ten on both feet by a 4-foot long
shark Tuesday in the resort town’s
first shark attack in 23 years, author
ities said.
The woman, identified as Carmen
Castro of Mexico City, was standing
chest-deep in the surf when she was
bitten shortly after noon, said police
spokesman Joe Rubio.
She underwent surgery Tuesday
afternoon at Valley Community
Hospital for severe shark bites on
both feet, a hospital spokesman said.
Rubio said autnorities were
searching for a “large fish, 4 feet
long at the most.”
Authorities immediately launched
a land, air and sea search to “assure
that this was an isolated incident
Rubio said.
“Apparently she was standing
there and saw the shark and tried to
move away,” Rubio said. “It bit one
and then the other foot and shod
She cried out for help and somebody
close by went over and it let go and
took off.”
A hospital spokesman confirmed
the woman suffered “very deep
shark bites on both feet. Doctors said
they believed the woman’s feel
would fully recover.
The last shark attack at the South
Texas resort town was in 1961 when'
a fisherman was bitten on the arms.
Rubio said.
