HUMBLE — A tornado ripped
through the fire station Wednesday,
tearing off the roof and the trans
mitter antenna, but injuring no one,
police said.
“In a very short period of time,
we’ve had hail, and torrential rain,”
said police chief Lennie Hendrick.
“We couldn’t even see across the
street. The power is out all over
town.”
Hendrick said the twister struck
the Houston suburb at 5:08 p.m. He
said no firefighting equipment was
damaged, and the police depart
ment was able to relay emergency
calls to firefighters.
Two mobile homes were de
stroyed and other homes were dam
aged during a severe thunderstorm
that struck near Austin and brought
rain to drought-stricken central
Texas.
Authorities said there were no in
juries when high winds struck the
mobile homes aoout two miles south
of Bergstrom Air Force Base. Air
Force officials said they clocked
wind gusts during the 2 p.m. storm
at 60 mph.
The National Weather Service
said only .4-inch of rain fell at the
Austin airport, but nearby Manor
got 1.5 inches.
Elsewhere, thunderstorms were
scattered over Lubbock, the Midland
area, and just north of the Golden
Triangle area.

It is 7:30 a.m. and the sun is be
ginning to shine. It feels like another
hot and sticky day on the Texas
A&M campus. Inside the Under

hall, Sharon Turner doesn’t
think about the heat. She is concen
trating on the shiny, stainless steel
hotdog cart that sne cleaned and
f iolished the night before. It sits in
ront of her like a hungry puppy
waiting to be fed its breakfast. The
cart, like the puppy, has to be sup
plied with the necessary materials to
get through the day.
By 7:50 she pushes the cart, fully
stocked with supplies, out into the
hot sun. It is then that she realizes
the hot, humid air and begins to
wonder if she made the right deci
sion in leaving New York.
As she pushes the cart down the
sidewalk past Heaton Hall, her
thoughts go back to the summer
days in western New York, she says.
There was always a slight breeze
blowing through the cool, dry New
York morning. It was different from
the hot, sticky morning air here at
Texas A&M, she says with a shrug.
By 8 a.m., the hotdog cart is in its
place under the old oak tree in front
of the Chemistry building. The
shade is great, she says as she wipes
the perspiration from her face. By
now the doughnuts and sweet rolls
have arrived from the kitchen and
are carefully placed on top of the
drink cooler and covered with plastic
wrap and aluminum foil. The cart is
positioned with all of-its parts in
place. The straws, napkins, sugar
and creamer packets and the coffee
stirrers are neatly arranged in va
rious places on the cart.
“I like to kee
nized as possible, snaron says
makes it easier when I get in a rush.
Around 9:30, classes get out and
business begins to boom.
“I think Aggies are super,” she
says with a big smile. “I had never
heard of Aggies until seven months
ago when I came to Texas. I am glad
I came here.”
At first students are the only cus
tomers but by 10 a.m. Sharon has
sold cold drinks, coffee and all of the
sweet rolls to professors and secre
taries and anybody else who walks

Sharon wishes luck to the student
and sends her off to take that
dreaded final.
She gets going so fast that you

you can see hands and arms flying in
every direction. Even through the

say “How are you today?”
