Bill Bradley, D-N.J., and a consumer or ganization joined forces Tuesday to push for doubling the proposed size of the national oil reserve. At a joint news conference, the Consumer Federation of America is sued its own study that substantiated Bradley’s contention that a bigger Strategic Petroleum Reserve is eco nomically justified and in the na tional interest. The reserve, begun in the mid- 1970s after the Arab oil embargo, now has about 400 million barrels of oil and is scheduled to eventually reach 750 million barrels. It is stored in huge underground salt caverns in Texas and Louisiana. Bradley, who recently introduced a comprehensive emergency pre paredness plan to the Senate Energy Committee, and the consumer fed eration, composed of more than 200 organizations, favor a reserve of at least 1.5 billion barrels. Bradley said it is his hope the En ergy Department will conduct a fol low-up study of the consumer feder ation report and also conclude that the oil reserve be increased. “This is not the type of issue that jumps at the American consumer when he gets up in the morning, but it is something Congress must ad dress,” said Bradley. The consumer report, “The Big ger the Better: The Public Interest in Building a larger Strategic Petro leum Reserve,” said: “Current policies are denying the American consumer vital insurance against economic disaster, as well as undermining our most effective method of deterring supply disrup tions.” The study said a properly sized and well used reserve could prevent massive price increases that have oc curred during previous Arab oil dis ruptions.
