attempts.
Delaney, 24, a running back for
the Kansas City Chiefs, died in 1983
while attempting to save two boys
who were floundering in a Louisiana
pond. Delaney, who was relaxing
near the water, heard the commo
tion and ran into the water where
the boys were last seen.
Upon reaching the area, Delaney
also went under the water and failed
to surface.
One of the children, Lanser Per
kins, 11, was rescued by others, but
died the following morning in a hos
pital. Harry Holland Jr., 11, died
during the mishap.
The awards, issued by the Pitts
burgh-based Carnegie Hero Fund
Commission, were granted to people
in 13 states and one Canadian prov
ince. Among the criteria for consid
eration is that the rescuer must risk
his life.
Several honors went to people
from Texas, including Joel

15-year-old declared hero
United Press International
FORT WORTH — A 15-year-old
cross country runner was officially
declared a hero Monday for saving
his infant cousin from a burning
house last summer. A few years ago
he had saved the baby’s father from
drowning.
Jesus Sanchez was notified Mon
day that he will receive a medal and
$2,500 from the Carnegie Hero
Fund Commission in Pittsburgh for
his heroics.
The 5-foot-6, 110-pound high
school junior said his formula for
heroism is simple: “Think about
other people instead of yourself.”
Sanchez was in his northside
home last July 1 when a sister called
to tell him a relative’s house was on
fire.
Sanchez, a member of his school’s
cross country running team, dashed
to the house to find a bedroom in
flames and his 18-month-old cousin
Carlito trapped inside.
“It was pretty dark. I couldn't»
much hut I saw the white of hisdit
per. He was in his crib. Hewasil
ready unconscious,” Sanchezsaid
A group of adults outside the
house had already given up on try
ing to rescue the baby because of the
hot flames. Sanchez said he dodged
past the adults as they tried to stop
him and raced through the thick
smoke to Carlito’s crib.
The infant cousin, who recoverd
from third-degree burns, is not ill
only member of the family whoow
his life to Sanchez’ bravery.
The youth also saved the
father, Marco Sanchez, from dim
ing a few years ago.
“I don’t know what made me do
it,” he said. “I wasn’t afraid at that
moment.
The two were fishing from....
tubes on the Trinity River whet
Marco Sanchez fell in.
“He can’t swim,” said Jesus. 1
was drowning. I pulled him out"
