Robert Slagle, a Mondale apporter, said there is an am ide among many Texas Demo- Kmldei rats l y iat t j ie former vice presi- hm e in en( already has the i^mocralic presidential nomi- ation locked up. “I think there is a potential man upset,” he said. “I’m not va liable redicting one. ' I Slagle said he was sticking by is earlier prediction that Mon- ‘ |S 1 " ale would eventually gel 60 IVel7,0 ®ent of Texas’ 200 delegates )the national convention. Dur- metul botnw ing the three-stage caucuses that begin Saturday, 169 dele gates will be at stake. Slagle said Texas Democrats are tired of the bickering be tween Mondale and Hart and are anxious to launch the fall campaign against President Reagan. “I know a lot of Texas Demo crats are bored with the process at this point,” he said. “They think Mondale is so far ahead (nationally) that he’s virtually uncatchable. “They’ve heard about all they want to hear about what few major policy differences that Mondale and Hart have.” Meanwhile, Slagle defended Texas’ cumbersome caucus sys tem and denied that it was de signed to favor Mondale. Both Hart and Jackson have criticized the system, saying it limits the process to a few thou sand party pros and works to Mondale’s advantage because most party regulars back former vice president. “That is untrue, a falsehood and a slander on the reputa tions and character of 66 state Democratic committee mem bers,” Slagle said. Slagle said there was no “beauty contest” or non-binding primary in 1984 because it was not requested. “We probably should have done it this time merely to sat isfy the press,” he said. “But the fact of the matter is there is a large element of fraud in that and I’ve never believed in de frauding the people of Texas.” junior (ora lo heavy imd ion and appli 5 Office, 2081 or appiicatk Ceremony to honor aufstonding service neti ces _ Outstanding faculty and staff Bribers will be recognized to- lay at a ceremony awarding dis- Imguished achievement for the 983-84 school year.
