otel rooms here hard to find on busy weekends
By TAMMY KIRK

u “No room at the inn.”
That’s what the hotel and
otel clerks of Bryan-College
alien must say to people seek-
rooms for graduation week-
iidlMay 4-6.
1 Most lodgings take reserva-
>ns up to a year in advance for
/is! weekends such as gradua-
'i|)n| Parents’ Day and football
ason. So, for those deciding to
line to Texas A&M functions
the last minute, rooms may
:hard to find.
The Holiday Inn, on Texas
'venue across from campus,
ikes reservations 50 weeks in
Jvance for a one-night deposit
lus tax, employee fewell
Owens said. This, year’s gradua
tion weekend has been booked
full for the entire year with no
cancellations, she said.
When they have no rooms
available, Owens says she calls
other motels in town to check
for vacancies or sends the cus
tomers to the Holiday Inn in
Brenham, about 30 minutes
away. If the Brenham Holiday
Inn is full, the customers proba
bly will have to travel to Nava-
sota or Hearne, she said.
Gail Briggs, an employee at
Aggieland Inn, said they also
take reservations up to a year in
advance. Their policies are sim
ilar to the Holiday Inn in that
room deposits are required in
advance.
“We’ve had several, several,
several calls in the last two
weeks for this weekend (grad
uation),” Briggs said. But,
again, no cancellations.
The Sands Motel, by the cor
ner of Texas Avenue and Uni
versity Drive, only takes reser
vations for graduation after the
first of the year, says owner Ed
Garner, Class of’37.
The people who make reser
vations at this motel are re
garded as “family,” Garner said.
“Most of the people who
come for football season and
other functions have been com
ing for 15 years,” he said. “Se
venty-five percent of the people
who stay here know what room
they’re going to be in and what
rooms everyone else is in, too.
In fact, I can name three
women right now who’ll be in
their housecoats drinking cof
fee with me on Saturday mori-
nin’.”
Garner said there has only
been one cancellation at the mo
tel, but that the room will easily
be filled.
The Ramada Inn, next to the
Sands Motel, never has a
cancellation unless there are ex
tenuating circumstances, says
Ursula Shellburg, an employee
for 17 years. The reason for the
low cancellation rates is that
pre-payment is required. What
ever the room costs, that’s what
the customers pay in advance.
With most hotels and motels
taking reservations a year in ad
vance and with such low
cancellation rates, many pro
spective lodgers are turned
away.
“We can’t make many sugges
tions if every other motel is
booked too,” Shellburg said.
Another alternative to stay
ing at a motel, though, is to stay
with students.
Mike Davis, a junior journa
lism major, says his mother Cleo
Davis has stayed with friends of
his in the women’s dorms seve
ral times. Mrs. Davis has stayed
in Underwood, Spence and
Neeley.
Mark Crisp, who graduated
last December, says that his par
ents stay with him in Oakwood
Townhomes or with friends in
town.
“Mom and dad stayed with
friends in a local cabin near Eas-
terwood Airport for my grad
uation,” Crisp said.
John Fuller, a freshman pe
troleum engineering major,
says that during Parents’ Week
end his mom stayed with his sis
ter Francine and his dad stayed
with him. John and Francine
both have apartments in the Ar
bor Square complex.
