closer its
stigated after accusations by a
former Baylor anesthesia resi
dent, Dr. Olufunso Ogunbase.
Ogunbase filed a $10 million
suit against the medical school
in January, claiming he was
denied certification because he
criticized the anesthesia pro
gram at Ben Taub and said
there had been numerous
deaths from inadequacies there.
In his suit, Ogunbase cited 23
cases in which death or brain
damage resulted from “anes
thetic mishap.”
Butler said the college’s in
vestigation of 22 of the cases de
termined one death and two
cases of brain damage could be
related to anesthesia. The 23rd
case could not be identified, he
said.
His letter gave no details on
the cases, saying, “There is liti
gation concerning some of
these patients, and the circum
stances related to them are well
documented.”
In the one death acknowl
edged by Baylor, Patricia Lou
Glass, 38, of Channelview died
during surgery to set a broken
leg. Trie Chronicle said the doc
tor who had access to all her
medical records reported the
cause of death as “blunt trauma
to the chest.”
The medical examiner, how
ever, determined the cause of
death as an improperly placed
tube, which was in
serted in her esophagus instead
of her windpipe.
Butler said based on his
study, the rate of incidences in
volving anesthesia-related
deaths or problems at Ben
Taub fell within national
norms.
“On the basis of these compa
risons, it would be concluded
that the allegations of serious
problems with anesthesia at Ben
Taub have been given more at
tention than they deserve,” he
said.
There are indications Baylor
has taken steps to stregthen its
anesthesia services at Ben Taub,
the Chronicle reported.
Last July, operating rooms at
Ben Taub had to be closed
when two positions for anesthe
siologists became vacant unex
pectedly.
Two anesthesiologists have
been hired since then, and two
more have been recruited to
start in July, Butler said in the
letter.
Durbin has also requested
stronger requirements for su
pervision in operating rooms
and for the reporting of mis
takes or accidents during sur
gery, the Chronicle reported.
Bratton will be sworn into of
fice during the school board
meeting tonight.
Bratton said he plans to keep
a low profile until he learns the
people and the operations of
the school board. One issue that
Bratton hopes to look into, he
said, is teacher pay raises.

How to turn this coupon into $7,000.
1. Prepare to visit our brief, get-
acquainted session on the date
shown below. The topic?
Lucrative summer jobs.
2. Here’s the $7,000: Several hundred
students have worked with us each
summer for the past 10 years.
Based on that, we estimate that the
average first-year person will make
$7,000 working 16 weeks this
summer. A few don’t do that well.
A few earn much more.
3. Remind yourself that we’re not
kidding. Hundreds have had $7,000
summers. You can, too—this coming
summer.
4. Attend our introductory meeting.
No pressure. Just facts and nice
people.
