State Capitol Building. When
the legislature isn’t in session,
both the House and Senate
chambers are open for a free
tour.

Houston. NASA alone would
keep you occupied for a while.

The Lyndon Baines Johnson
Space Center is my favorite mu
seum in Texas. It’s got giant
rockets, a lunar rover and Sky-
lab trainers, and you get to put
on space helmets for your own
imaginary space trip.
Another neat place to take a
trip is the San Jacinto Museum
of History. For $1.50 you can
ride the elevator up the 570-foot
monument. You get a great
view the Battleship Texas. The
ship also houses a museum.
• Heading north into the DaJ-
las-Fort Worth area, you’ll find
several museums worth seeing.
The Science Place, which is a
museum and learning center
dealing with science and tech
nology.
They have a new “hands-on”
exhibit on topics like energy,
computers, health and anat
omy, communications and en
gineering. The museum also
features the first solar-powered
airplane. It costs $1.00 for
adults.
Another interesting place in
Dallas is the Old City Park. The
view of a dog-trot house with
the Dallas skyline in the back
ground is worth the trip.
The Fort Worth Museum of
Science and History offers the
Noble Planetarium’s light and
sound show called Laser Magic.
And the Omni Theater features
an 80 foot tilted dome that cre
ates 180-degree images. It’s
free.
Other unsual Texas museums
include Jefferson, which has the
Jay Gould Railroad Car, a mu
seum that doubles as an inter
esting hotel; Kilgore has the
East Texas Oil Museum, com
plete with an oil well; and Ne
derland has the Dutch Wind
mill Museum, housed in an
exact replica of a Dutch Wind
mill.
Since Texas has more than
500 museums, they can’t all be
included, but they should be
easy for you to find. Most are
free; none cost more than $3.00,
and all of them offer a change of
