United Press International let NEW’ YORK — A medical pro fessor wants to gel the word out to men who have heart attacks that it’s OK after recovery to re sume sexual activity with a reg ular partner. Dr. Gordon S. Walbroehl said many heart attack patients are physically able to resume sexual activity, but quite a few are afraid to do so. They won’t always mention their fears, Walbroehl said, so doctors should bring the subject up themselves. Walbroehl, assistant profes sor in the Department of Family Practice at Wright Stale Univer sity School of Medicine, Dayton, Ohio, said fear of death or a re peat heart attack is the most fre quent reason given for decreas ing or not resuming sexual activity after leaving the hospi tal. Another reason for the reluc tance, he said, is that a major coronary event is a massive blow to the ego of male patients, forcing them to assume a pas sive role. He believes if patients had the facts about having sex with their regular partners there would be fewer such fears. “Recent surveys of both men and women patients showed that only about half (58 percent and 45 percent, respectively,) received information about postcoronary sexual activity be fore they were discharged from the hospital,” he said. In a report in American Fam ily Physician, the journal ofi American Academy of Faai Physicians, Walbroehl encw aged doctors to defuse a p Jriited Pri lient’s fears by letting tilt know: RUNG! ‘When most individuals: Wihisfif walk five level blocks comfot barbey ably or climb two flights! ^ rove i 1 stairs, usually they can safelyt ni ghk er sunie sexual intercoursewi ^ to sir regular partner." ktoseve lie said this is based onil "ph ov e scientific monitoring of 4 heartbeat of postcoronan p elro 't, tients both during normala® 8 ame sw kies and during sex withtte ;ni oved t regular partners. “The average maximal itt ^ I rate during sexual intercoon |4 was 117 beats per minute, il most identical to that of di# flights of stairs," Is „.
