Children’s
trauma unit
now open
United Press International
DALLAS — Parkland Hospi
tal announced Wednesday the
opening of a medical center de
signed solely for the treatment
of seriously injured children.
The Parkland Pediatric
Trauma Center is expected to
significantly improve the ability
of medical science to prevent
deaths and long-term disabili
ties among children, said Dr.
Ron J. Anderson, Parkland’s
president and chief executive
officer.
The center is one of only
four pediatric trauma units in
the nation and the only com
plete center designed for treat
ing seriously injured children,
Anderson said. Other centers
are located in Salt Lake City,
Baltimore and Boston.
The center also will serve as a
major research and teaching fa
cility where pediatric physicians
and nurses can learn improved
treatments and develop meth
ods of peventing injuries.
“The center’s aim will he not
only to treat the injured child,
but also to play a crucial role in
developing a body of knowl
edge about pediatric trauma.”
Anderson said. “It will serve as
a clearinghouse of information
in child trauma.”
What’s up
The center’s computer-based
information system will collect
and correlate demographic and
patient outcome data. This, the
medical staff says, is crucial to
the development of new' and
better treatment methods and
to the more effective applica
tion of existing techniques and
technology.
“What we learn by having a
central source of information
will enable us to react more
quickly as physicians in diagnos
ing injured children,” Andei
son said. “That faster and more
accurate diagnosis can save lives
and speed recovery.”
