AUSTIN — The cost to tax
payers for providing extra law
enforcement protection for the
35 Ku Klux Klan members who
marched briefly in Austin over
the weekend will exceed
$1 75,000, officials said Sunday.
There were no arrests and no
injuries in the march and rally
Saturday at the state Capitol,
which lasted less than 40 min
utes.
The exact cost of overtime
and equipment costs for riot-
equipped lawmen has not been
determined, but police Chief
Frank Dyson said the cost to city
taxpayers will be higher than
the $70,000 the 1983 march
cost.
Larry Todd, spokesman for
the state Department of Public
Safety, said state costs were esti
mated at more than $107,000.
About 290 Austin police offi
cers and 325 state troopers kept
a close watch on the Klan and
the 700 anti-Klan demonstra
tors.
The march Saturday was in
sharp contrast to one in Austin
on Feb. 19, 1983 when 1 1 peo
ple were injured and 13 ar
rested in a rock-throwing me
lee.
