AUSTIN — A 16-year-old
boy charged with capital mur
der and attempted capital mur
der in separate shootings of a
court official and a college coed
pleaded guilty Wednesday and
was sentenced to 55 years in
prison.
Joe Anthony Rivera, who was
certified to stand trial as an
adult, will have to serve 18 years
in prison before he is eligible
for parole.
Rivera pleaded guilty to mur
der in the Oct. 20, 1983 killing
of Pat Curry, 23, a deputy clerk
in the Travis County District
Court.
He also pleaded guilty to at
tempted capital murder in the
Sept. 26 shooting of University
of Texas student Leigh Leon
ard, 24, who survived two gun
shot wounds to the head.

Wednesday ended the capital
murder trial of Henry Lee Lu
cas by debating the truthfulness
of confessions Lucas gave in the
1979 Georgetown slaying.
The 47-year-old drifter is
charged with strangling an un
identified woman hitchhiker,
whose body was found along
Interstate 35 on Oct. 31, 1979.
Judge John Carter granted a
change of venue to West Texas
for the trial, which consisted of
eight days of testimony before
an eight-woman, four-man
jury.

Lucas also was accused of
kidnapping, raping and rob

capital murder, he would face
life in prison or the death pen
alty.
Carter instructed jurors they
could find Lucas guilty of capi
tal murder, guilty of murder,
inriocent or innocent by reason
of insanity.
“What it all boils down to is
there is absolutely no evidence
— none — that links Henry Lee
Lucas to this unidentified white
female other than his confes
sions,” defense attorney Max
Parker said.
Parts of taped confessions
Lucas gave authorities last year
were played for jurors during
the trial.
Defense attorneys argued
Lucas made the statements
while under the influence of
Thorazine and also out of a
sense of remorse for killing his
common-law-wife.
“They have to prove to you
that when he killed that girl, he
was legally insane — not that he
was different, not that he was
strange,” Anderson said.
Defense attorneys also ar
gued Lucas confessed simply to
give authorities what they
wanted to hear.
