    VP/Academic Affairs
JAMES M. TROY
Senior
Major: Biology
I’m running for vice presi
dent of academic affairs as a
means of best assisting the
student body at Texas A&M.
As Coordinator for Special
Projects on the Academic Af
fairs Committee this past year
I’ve been actively involved
with the functions of the vice
president. Included was the
development of a University
wide tutorial system now
available in the library. My
goals for the upcoming year,
in addition to a close working
relationship witht the Faculty
Senate, are a revitalized ef
fort supporting optional fi
nals for graduating seniors.
Also I would like to see the
expansion of the present tu
torial system and a continued
effort to make the students
more aware of the Job Place
ment Center and its reorgani
zation.
DOUG WITTRUP
Sophomore
Major: Management
It is said that in the last few
years the Student Govern
ment at Texas A&M has had
more potential but has been
less effective in getting stu
dent input into curriculum
than at any other time in re
cent history. In my experi
ence with Student Govern
ment, as a senator this year
and in committee work my
freshman year, it has been
frustrating to see this area
stagnate. It is time for a
change.
To solve this problem I
would like to initiate the Cur
rent Curriculum Review
Board, a board consisting of
the two portions of the Uni
versity community most in
volved with the curriculum:
students and faculty. Sec
ondly, I would like to revamp
the Faculty Guide, a program
that seems to have been for
gotten in recent years. It is
time we took control of our
curriculum.
VP/Finance
MICHAEL KELLEY
Senior
Major: Aerospace Engi
neering
I am a candidate for the of
fice of vice president for fi
nance because I believe that
the student body of Texas
A&M deserves experienced,
fiscally responsible leadership
in their Student Government.
I am the only candidate who
has previous leadership expe
rience on the Finance Com
mittee, having served as exec
utive director — the #2
position — on the committee.
I also serve as a senator, rep
resenting Engineering at
Large, for which I have been
recognized as an Outstanding
Senator of the year. My pri
mary goal in this office is to
maintain the standards of ef
ficiency and professionalism
which were established by this
year’s Finance committee. My
specific concerns in this area
include:
Funding only clearly iden
tifiable student services with
Student Service Fees.
Investigating the availabil
ity of alternative funding
sources for areas funded by
Student Service Fees.
Development of long-term
funding solutions for the
MSC, Health Center and In
ternational Student Activities.
A’LETA PARKS
Junior
Major: Business Analysis/Ma
nagement
I have leadership experi
ence as the co-chairman for
Student Information Sys
tems, University Rules and
Regulations Committee and
two years experience on each
of the Student Government
Finance, Rules and Regula
tions and Academic Affairs
Committees. My past experi
ence has given me the oppor
tunity to interact with Univer
sity administrators. This
experience is necessary for an
effective leadership on the
Academic Affairs Committee.
I would like to expand the
Engineering Dean’s Forum to
other colleges. I will continue
to represent student opinion
on registration and senior,
final exams.
TOM URBAN
Senior
Major: Aerospace Engi
neering
I’m running a campaign of
issues. After returning to
Texas A&M from two years
at the U.S. Naval Academy, I
was very disappointed at the
direction in which Texas
A&M is moving academically.
Having lived as a professor s
son in College Station for
eight years I’ve had the op
portunity to meet many stu
dents, faculty members and
administrators so I know the
problems of Texas A&M
from more than one perspec
tive. I have visited many
other universities and know
how they solve similar prob
lems. I worked with many
campus leaders as coordina
tor of Aggie Olympics and an
active member of External
Affairs.
My main objective is to get
serious students more access
to the library and computer
facilities, especially on week
ends. I want to see more
fundraising for academic im
provements and faculty sala
ries, promotion of faculty
based on teaching ability, and
more student input on the
academic administration.
JIM COLLINS
Junior
Major: Chemical Engineering
Although academic excel
lence is the goal of each stu
dent and faculty member,
conflicts often arise between
the two. The position of Vice
President of Academic Af
fairs would allow me the op
portunity to provide the stu
dents with a strong voice in
the decisions being made.
During the past year, I have
served as a student senator,
president of Lambda Sigma
and have held other lead
ership positions throughout
the University. Therefore, I
believe I am qualified to serve
the students in this capacity.
There are many academic
decisions, including manda
tory senior finals, which stu
dents feel very strongly about
but which the administration
believes the students are apa
thetic towards that are being
made. I think the students do
care, and someone needs to
stand up and say something
VP/External Affairs
CHRIS MCGILVRAY
Junior
Major: Renewable Natural
Resources
I have an extremely fresh
outlook on the aspects of stu
dent government that need
improvement, through my
extensive involvement in sev
eral varied student activities.
I now have gained experience
in a diverse variety of student
groups, and thus have access
to many different ideas and
attitudes. My involvement in
cludes: Agricultural Council,
Intergovernmental Relations
Coordinator for the External
Affairs (B-CS city council liai
sons, city council reception,
and the Student Government
Voter Registration Drive),
Student Senate, Political Fo
rum, Prelaw Society, and offi
cer in the Forestry Club. I
also attended the National
Student Conference on Voter
Registration at Harvard,
where I learned about the va
rious aspects of student activ-
itism and also about Public
Interest Research Groups
BRETT SHINE
Sophomore
Major: General Studies
Through External Affairs,
Student Government strives
to represent the student’s
views and concerns in the
community; unfortunately,
we have not yet begun to real
ize the tremendous potential
this committee can achieve
for our students. I feel that I
have the leadership and de
termination to make external
affairs better than ever. As a
freshman aide and off-cam
pus senator, I have worked to
improve student-community
relations in many capacities,
most notably as an apartment
council president in Off-
Campus Aggies and through
city and state government in
the Legislative Study Group.
I feel that the key to a success
ful year will be comprised of
several different factors:
(1) More efficient, direct
contact with city leaders and
property owners,
(2) Strong association with
other student-community or
ganizations such as OCA,
RHA and LSG,
(3) More representation
for students in city govern
ment.
I am looking forward to a
very productive year in Ex
ternal Affairs and would ap
preciate your support in the
upcoming election.
KYLE COLDREN
Senior
Major: Fiannce/Marketing
I am running for the posi
tion of Vice President of Fi
nance because I believe that
our Student Government
should make a conscious ef
fort to increase student in
volvement from all academic
colleges on the campus. In
working toward this goal, I
plan to play a major role with
a heightened awareness of
the Finance Committee and
its place in responsive Stu
dent Government. I stand be
hind my past record as an of
ficer on the Business Student
council and my role on the Fi
nance Committe for the past
year, I feel that being a fi
nance major should benefit
me in that I fully understand
the budgetary process and its
impact on the University as a
whole. In closing, my most
important goal is that of as
suring an equitable distribu
tion of Student Service Fees
to maximize the benefit for
all students, whether they are
pn or off-campus Aggies.
VP/Rules and
Regulations
RANDY VICKERS
Sophomore
Major: Pre-med
I am running for vice pres
ident of Rules and Regula
tions. Rules and Regs reviews
the University Blue Book, the
Student Body Constitution
and the Student Senate By-
Laws. I want to help the stu
dent body have ample say in
what goes into the University
regulations. As VP I will be a
representative of the student
body, through the senate, to
the University Rules and Reg
ulations Committee.
I have held many Student
Government positions. For
example, I have held the fol
lowing positions: Fish Aide,
Senator (two years), Internal
Affairs, Freshman Programs
Co-cooridinator, Rules and
Regs Committee and Ad-hoc
Committee (sub-committee of
Rules and Regs).
My goal as VP will be to
form some type of suggestion
box. This box will be for stu
dent input. My highest goal is
to fully represent the student
body and keep the Aggie
Code of Honor a major part
of this University.
MARK MANIHA
Freshman
Major: General Studies
I am running for vice pres
ident of Rules and Regula
tions because I feel that I
have many contributions to
give to the committee. I have
several ideas that I would like
to see implemented next
year. I hope to reach my goals
and the goals of Student Gov
ernment through my work
ing with the committee and
the four other standing com
mittees.
I have been freshman sen
ator this year and have
worked in the Rules and Reg
ulations general committee as
well as the ad-hoc special
committee. I have also
worked in the External Af
fairs committee on special
projects. I am currently in
numerous other clubs and or
ganizations such as College
Republicans and Aggies for
Barton. I feel that I have a
very good understanding of
Student Government and Ag
gie life.
My overall goal is that the
committee and Student Gov
ernment in general will be
stronger next year. I hope to
contribute as much as possi
ble toward this goal. I am a
big believer in more student
input, not just suggestions,
but I feel that the student
body as a whole should have
more decision making
through voting power.
