UAW urged to support Mondale
United Press International
WASHINGTON — AFL-
CIO chief Lane Kirkland urged
United Auto Workers union
leaders Monday to push hard to
elect Walter Mondale as presi
dent, saying another term for
Ronald Reagan could mean an
even deeper recession.
Kirkland told the UAW’s
annual political-legislative con
ference that the 13.7 million-
member federation’s efforts to
give Mondale the Democratic
nomination “are well advanced
and intensifying in every district
of every state.”
The results of organized
labor’s backing of Mondale will
begin to show in the Democratic
Party caucuses in Iowa Feb. 20,
Kirkland said.
The former vice president is
scheduled to address the UAW
gathering Tuesday.
“On Nov. 6, Solidarity Day
IV, the work of repairing the
damage of the last four years will
begin,” Kirkland told cheering
delegates. “We have no illusion
of easy victory, but our move
ment was not built on easy vic
tories.”
The AFL-CIO has designated
election day Solidarity Day IV,
the fourth annual observance of
organized labor’s dissatisfaction
with the Reagan administration
and its policies.
“All of us welcome any sign of
recovery. With every worker
who is called back to a protected
job and with every new car that
rolls off the line, the country re
covers by that much from the
depths of its most recent de
spair,” Kirkland said. “But in
human terms, real recovery is
going to take a long long time.”
Kirkland said for those “lucky
enough to be back on the job,
stripped of their homes and
their savings and their posses
sions, recovery is years away.”
“For more than 10 million
Americans who desperately
need and want jobs, recovery is
not even in sight,” he said. “For
all Americans the danger of a
new collapse into an even worse
and deeper Reagan recession
will remain until there are
changes in the policies that
brought us to the brink of dis
aster.”
$11.1 million lottery prize
claimed by Canadian couple
United Press International
TORONTO — After keep
ing Canada in suspense for nine
days, a Canadian couple who
together earned $440 a week
claimed an $11.1 million lottery
jackpot Monday — the largest
tax-free prize ever won in North
America.
They both quit their jobs.
Stuart and Lillian Kelly, of
Brantford, Ont., said they
wanted to buy a new home,
travel to Florida and invest the
remainder of their winnings —
nearly $14 million in Canadian
dollars — from the Lotto 649
jackpot.
They also plan to share the
prize with their eight brothers
and sisters, Mr. Kelly’s mother
and charities. The couple has no
children.
Mr. Kelly, 57, has worked as a
truck driver for Thibodeau-
Finch Express Ltd. for 35 years.
His wife, 54, has been employed
for Speed Queen dry cleaners
for 31 years.
Mrs. Kelly said that after
watching the winning numbers
drawn on television Jan. 14 and
reading her ticket over and over,
she started to cry.
“My stomach started aching,
my arms started aching,” she
said at a news conference. “I
thought, T’m having a heart
attack and I won’t live to enjoy
it.’”
They first kept the ticket in a
drawer where they hide their
money and later transferred it to
a safety deposit box. Mrs. Kelly
said they held on to it for more
than a week because, “We really
didn’t know what to do.”
Their lawyer called the
Ontario Lottery Corporation
offices in Toronto last Wednes
day to say the Kellys held the
winning ticket in the Lotto 649
jackpot — the largest tax-free
lottery prize ever in North
America.
But their winnings were not
revealed to the public until they
arrived Monday morning with
the ticket.
There was only winner from
among the 67.5 million tickets
sold, in which players selected
six numbers between 1 and 49.
The Kellys bought nine tick
ets, each worth a $1, and beat
odds of 14 million to one to win.
They have been spending about
$ 10 a week on lotteries for many
years.
By waiting a week, the couple
gave up about $14,000 in in
terest that would have accrued
on the huge prize.
