Department ranked fifth
in political science survey

The Texas A&M Department
of Political Science ranked fifth
in a survey of scholarly articles in
general and specialized political
science journals from 1978-
1982.
The survey was completed
this fall by John L. Foster of
Southern Illinois University and
the results were presented last
month at the 1983 meeting of
the Southern Political Science
Association.
Of the schools surveyed,
Texas A&M ranked third in the
survey of six general political sci
ence journals, 15th in the publi
cation of specialized journals
and fifth overall.
The purpose of the survey
was to update and expand pre
vious studies that had been done
on publications in major scho
larly journals, the primary out
lets for research publications in
political science.
In the general political scien
ce category, the journals sur
veyed were the American Jour
nal of Political Science, The
American Political Science Re
view, The Journal of Politics,
Polity, Social Science Quarterly,
and Western Political Quarterly.
The specialized journals sur
veyed were American Politics
Quarterly, Comparative Politics,
Law and Society Review, Public
Administration Review, Political
Theory, and World Politics.
Texas A&M ranked 44th in a
similar survey which comprised
publications from 1966-1977.
Samuel A. Kirkpatrick, head
of the political science depart
ment, says that part of the
reason they ranked so low in the
1966-1977 survey was because
the department was in transi
tion.
“We had a lot of new people
and we made a major shift from
being almost exclusively an
undergraduate teaching depart
ment to a more balanced com
prehensive department with
undergraduate and graduate in
struction and a lot of research
activity,” Kirkpatrick said.
He also said that this year’s
ranking will help his depart
ment recruit the best faculty and
the best graduate students from
around the country as well as
having a spillover effect on the
quality of instruction undergra
duate students receive.
