Page 12/The Battalion/Monday, December 12, 1983 Tech tops Pepperdine TANK >I« NA>I VHA United Press International Beset by defections and a dis ciplinary problem that forced coach Gerald Myers to kick three players off his team, the Texas Tech Red Raiders experi enced an unpleasant season last year. There were more Tech cheerleaders at the games than basketball players and the Raid ers suffered through an 11-20 season, the first losing campaign since Myers took over the team in 1971. But because of Myers’ ability to get the most out of a team, it was expected Tech would be back in a hurry. And the Raiders made it back even quicker than that. Texas Tech won its fifth con secutive game Saturday night. drubbing Pepperdine in Lub bock, 82-64. Earlier in the week Pepperdine had beaten nation ally ranked Wichita. In addition. Tech owns a vic tory over Nebraska in Lincoln — the same team that knocked off Arkansas Saturday night, 67-54. Tech shot 54 percent from the field, turned the ball over only nine times and generally outplayed the Waves. “But it was our second half defense that did it,” said Myers. “Make no mistake, Pepperdine is a good team.” Just how good a team Tech might be could be answered this week when the Raiders reward themselves by taking a trip to Tokyo for two games in the Sun- tory Classic. Tech will face DePaul on Thursday and Alabama on Friday. The Raiders will take a 5-1 re cord to Japan, one of three SWC teams with such a mark. Houston advanced to 5-1 as well with a key win early in the week over LSU and a 71-55 deci sion over St. Mary’s Saturday night. Michael Young continued his early season work with 24 points while Akeem Olajuwon claimed 13 rebounds and block ed six shots. Southern Methodist is also 5- 1, having shaken off a one-sided loss to Louisville to post wins over Pennsylvania and lightly regarded Georgia State. The shocker of the week was Arkansas’ loss in Nebraska, where the Cornhuskers took advantage of cold Razorbacks shooting in the second period to pull off the surprise. “I don’t believe I’ve ever had a ball club go as cold as we did at the beginning of the second half,” said Arkansas coach Eddie Sutton. Elsewhere around the confer ence there was not much to gloat about. TCU did slip past Idaho State, 53-52, in the opening round of the Marshall Memorial Invitational, but then the host school routed the Horned Frogs, 90-67. Other than Tech’s trip to Tokyo, the highlights of next week’s schedule will feature SMU’s apperance in the Dallas Morning News Classic, Houston hosting the Kettle Classic and Texas A&M taking part in the Indiana Classic. Midland rolls to Texas 5 A final United Press International The Midland Lee Rebels have one more team left to convince. They certainly convinced the Plano Wildcats last Saturday as they defeated the Wildcats to advance to the Texas 5A state football championship. <1% cP A” cr r. ° W O' - < & & v^. ^iiiiiimiHimmiiiiiiiiiiitiiiiiiiiiimiimiiiiiiiiHtiMiiiitimmimmimiiiimMiiiimiiiiiiiHiimiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiimiiimiiii^ University Book Stores NORTHGATE 409 UNIVERSITY DR. Midland Lee and Converse Judson will meet next Saturday in Texas Stadium to decide one of the five state championships that will be on the line. The Rebels used touchdown runs of 32, 45, 72 and 61 yards — the last two of those by Walter Jones —to overcome a 14-6 half time deficit and oust Plano from the playoffs, 35-14. Last week Lee defeated powerhouse Odes sa Permian 20-0. Converse Judson likewise came from behind in the second half to defeat Houston Yates, 29-19. Judson running back Chris Pryor became the single season rushing record holder for Texas 5 A football, raising his 1983 total to 2,600 yards to sur pass the record of 2,411 held by former SMU star Craig James.
