Walker County chief deputy Sheriff Ted Pearce said the highway closed at 6 a.m. after ambulance crews discovered the chemical phenol, or carbolic acid, leaking from the truck’s ruptured tank. There was no evacution of residents because of the spill, but traffic was re routed onto secondary roads. The Department of Public Safety reported that from 1,000 to 2,000 of phenol leaked from the truck, which was carrying 6,000 gallons of the liquid. A spokeswoman for the DPS in Austin said one lane of traffic in each direction was reopened at about noon. The truck driver, Vernon Helbert, 56, of Baytown, was taken to Huntsville Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. CS Council to vote on The College Station City Council will vote on whether the city will become a part of the Lone Star Municipal Pow er Agency, at a special meet ing at 5 tonight. A.E. Vandiver, assistant city manager, said the pur pose of the agency would be to explore alternate sources of power power that will save money for people living in College Sta tion, Kirbyville, Newton and Caldwell. He said the agency would research several sources of electric power in order to most effectively buy power and re- ’ duce cost.
