back page Christmas celebration in Galveston For the tenth magical year Dicken's Evening returns to Galveston's historic Strand this weekend ,bringing a host of Dicken's favorite charac ter's, scores of Victorian enter- tainers and the sights, sounds, foods and flavors of Victorian-era London. Produced by 3,000 volun teers of the Galveston Histor ical Foundation, Dicken's Evening celebrates the life and writings of English author. Charles Dickens. This year's event will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sun day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. A festive pre-Dickens' Per formance Festival will open the weekend with tonight's bash. A performance of the musical "Oliver" will be fea tured at The Strand Theater, "H.M.S. Pinafore" will be performed on board the res tored 1877 square rigger Elissa and "Texas Orchestra Pre sents a Victorian Christmas" is in the 1894 Grand Opera House. Candlelight tours will be featured at Ashton Villa, the 1859 Italianite mansion and The Antique Doll Museum and certain Galves ton hotels and restaurants will participate with traditional English dinners. There are close-ups of ceremo nial occasions, informal fami ly gatherings, off-duty esca pades and glimpses of his working life as an active naval officer during and after the Faulkland Islands campaign. In this book are the public achievements and private mo ments of England's "Playboy prince." 10-year-old who loves Christ mas and games but also to the child in every adult who re members the warmth of a tra ditional Christmas. Huge pa rades with the wonderful characters who danced throughout Dicken's books and colorful enactments of scenes from the books have been scheduled. There will be hoop games, and skittles and even mum- bly-peg! You are invited to gorge yourself in luscious gingerbread, caramel apples and sumptuous scones. "Dickens' Evening is now a Christmas tradition," says Co-Vice President Larry Wygant. "With ten years of authentic Victorian cheer, the event has a reputation for quality and family entertain ment. I invite you to share this celebration." Tickets are $3 at the gate. Tickets for children ages six to 12 and adults over 65 will be $1. Children she and under will be free. Admission is free to anyone coming in full Vic torian costume. Asked-for single released "LateNight America," the live, national call-in talk show hosted by Dennis Wholey, has announced the release of the "Theme from LateNight America" as a 45 rpm single. Musician Joseph Lo Duca is the Emmy-award-winning composer/arranger of the popular tune. "After receiving calls and letter from viewers around the country requesting informa tion about our theme, we de cided to release the music for radio airplay," says program producer Bill Pace. "The music reflects the excitement of doing a live, nightly prog ram from one of America's music capitals — Detroit. It has the jazz feel combined with the influence of the Mowtown sound." "LateNight America" is Resort opens season For all you ski buffs looking for places to go, Red River Sla Area in Red River, New Mex ico, opened the 1983-1984 ski season on Thanksgiving Day. Lift ticket prices remain un changed since 1981 at $16 for adults and $9 for juniors says Drew Judycki, Ski Area Man ager. Red River will continue its successful program of offer ing free lift tickets to children 12 years of age or younger whose parents have booked accomodations through a par ticipating Red River Area Re servations lodge. The ski area will also offer two "value sea sons" in 1983-1984. They are: The Earlybird Season — Nov. 24 through Dec. 16. Skiers booking a three-night minimum stay at a participat ing lodge will be able to purch ase a three-day package of lift tickets and ski lessons, or lift tickets, lessons and rentals for 50 percent off the regular price. Lodging will be reduced 20 percent during this time re- riod. The Bargain Hunter Season — Jan. 8 through Feb. 3. Skiers booking a three-night minimum stay at a participat ing lodge will receive a 25 per cent discount on their lift and lesson or lift, lesson and rental packages. A10 percent loging discount will also be offered. Red River Ski Area is lo cated 35 miles north of Taos, New Mexico, in the heart of the Sangre de Cristo moun tain range.
