Commentary
by Dick West
United Press International
WASHINGTON — "Never
look back," cautioned Satchel
Paige, the legendary baseball
pitcher and philosopher.
"Something may be gaining on
you."
The last time I dared glance
over my shoulder, something,
in Paige's prophetic words, was
indeed gaining on us. The year
1984 was moving up fast and
appeared certain to overtake us
by next Jan. 1, if not sooner.
But not, apparently, in the
way that George Orwell pre
dicted. (Orwell, by the way,
couldn't throw a decent curve
either.)
Compared to the 1984 that
Orwell envisioned in 1948,
when he took his chilling look
into the future, the real thing is
shaping up as a major wash-out.
Sure, technology has been
marching into society like crazy.
That is apparent to anyone who
is exposed to home computer
commercials on television.
Basically, however, the direc
tion is somewhat different from
what Orwell forecast 35 years
ago.
It wasn't long ago that com
puter language written for the
layman was mainly devoted to
explaining the meaning of
Orwellian abbreviations and ter
minology. Microchips alone
were enough to start dreaders of
"1984" quaking in their fortune
cookies.
Now, however, the home
computer business has marched
to the point where it is begin
ning to incite travesty. Publica
tion of a new "irreverent com
puter dictionary" apparently
means someone considers it
harmless enough to poke fun at
its foibles.
It is true that much of the
computerese fun-poking thus
far consists of play on such jar
gon as "byte." The title of the
aforementioned dictionary, I am
obliged to report, is "Small
Bytes." And the authors go to
some length to point out that
small bytes are not the same
things as "nybbles."
Such pouncing upon the ob
vious must iaave George Orwell
turning over in his inkwell.
Once we get 1984 behind us,
our next glimpse of the future
may be even more blurred. Con
sider this myopic destiny con
jectured by the World Future
Society at a recent conference:
"There is momentum to keep
things as they are."
I commend that divination to
all who cringe at the thought of
1984. Impetus generated by in
ertia is one force Orwell didn't
anticipate.
In other words, if you peer too
far ahead you may find you have
already caught up with things in
front. Only the U.S. govern
ment can claim such progress.
