Page 14/The Battalion/Thursday, December 1,1983 Langston leads Aggies to big win over Lamar All SWC by Bob Caster Battalion Staff The Texs A&M women’s bas ketball team look advantage of the home court and a superb scoring exibilion by Dallas soph omore Lisa Langston to crush Lamar 90-70 Wednesday night. Langston connected on 15 of 24 field goals and hit one of five free throws making her the game’s top scorer with 31 points. She also finished the night with eight rebounds and five steals. “Lisa did excellent on the boards,” commented Aggie head coach Cherri Rapp, who is in her fifth season at A&M. She added that Langston is a great threat on the rebound and the fast break. The Aggies, who retained the lead throughout the entire game, had three players in dou ble digits. Mary Ann Swearngin and Michell Tatum both scored 18 points in addition to Lang ston’s 31. But perhaps the most pleasant surprise, at least as far as Rapp is concerned, has been the performance of guard Beth Young, the newcomer from Au stin. “I’ve been real pleased with Beth,” Rapp said. “She’s only a freshman but she’s a lot further along than I anticipated this sea son. Both she and Mary Ann (Swearngin) did real good jobs on defense.” Langston and Swearngin led the Aggies in steals with five apiece. The team had 20 steals for the night while Lamar could come up with only six. A persistent full-court press on behalf of the Aggies allowed their offense to enjoy a 44-31 lead at the half. But the Cardin als, aided by Texas A&M tur novers and a handf ul of person al fouls, pulled to within three points of the Aggies in the mid dle of the second half. After calling a much needed time-out, the Aggies got things back on the right track, even tually extending their lead to 20 points. continued from page 13 Second Team Defense End — Anthony Beverley, SMU (San Antonio), 6-1, 204, sophomore; Ervin Randle, Baylor (Hearne, Texas), 6-1, 230, junior. United Press International KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A federal judge has denied a re quest by Kansas City Royals first baseman Willie Aikens to reduce the amount of prison time he must serve on a misdemeanor charge of attempted possession of cocaine. U.S. District Judge J. Milton Sullivant ruled late Tuesday that the sentence he imposed on Aikens Nov. 17, “is valid and appropriate in all respects and that the same should not be re duced or modified.” The judge had sentenced Aikens to be imprisoned for 90 days of a one-year suspended sentence and had recom mended he be sent to a mini mum security facility in Fort Worth, Texas. Sullivant also fined him the maximum $5,000 and ordered him to report Jan. 3, allowing time for the ball player to finish an in-patient drug treatment program in Baltimore, Md.
