He also took classes in studio design, maintenance and acous tics. Then Cooper and his wife moved back to Bryan/College Station in 1980 to start a studio. "We first thought about a mobile recording studio that would travel all around the state," he says, "but because of special problems related to a mobile studio, we decided to have a fixed location." The idea for a studio didn't evolve quickly, he says. The ori ginal plans included opening the studio in one year, but that was extended to three years be cause of the economic climate of the area. Cooper is financing Brasswind through a bank loan. Finding a satisfactory place was the next problem because of special considerations for secur ity and sound, he says. The loca tion of Brasswind — in The Shi loh Place Shopping Center — is good, he says, because of the area. Cooper says he is trying to in corporate three basic markets into his studio. The immediate market is Bryan/College Station, then Heame, Brenham, Hemp stead and Navasota and the fringes of Waco ( Austin and Houston. Currently, he is negotiating work with a group from San Antonio and two groups from Houston. The personality of the studio makes a difference, he says, and people are willing to travel if they feel more comfort able or creative in a certain atmosphere. The groups need to feel com fortable with the engineer and the surroundings, he says. "I'll make suggestions to the client," he says, "but I will do what a client wants. If he's not satisfied, then he won't come back. "I'm trying to set an initial standard of quality. "If a client doesn't have quali ty work when he walks out the door," Cooper says, "I don't have any business being in this business."
