Debakey testifies to
help Baylor program

HOUSTON — Heart
surgeon Michael DeBakey has
testified in court in defense of a
Baylor College of Medicine
program that sends surgeons to
Saudi Arabia.
U.S. District Judge James
DeAnda said he would rule later
in a lawsuit filed against Baylor
by two Jewish physicians who
claimed they were illegally bar-

Saudi Arabia bans anything
associated with Israel, including
persons of the Jewish faith, but
Baylor denies any discrimina
tion.
Federal law forbids cooperat-
ing with the Arab boycott
against Israel.
The suit was filed by Dr.
Stuart Linde, 40, now a Baylor
professor, and Lawrence
Abrams, 37, a New York anes
thesiologist who formerly work
ed with Baylor.
DeBakey, 75, said in court
Tuesday that if he believed the
program discriminated against
Jewish physicians he would can
cel it. “The only discrimination

he said.

promotion for Mattel Inc.
Daniel Helwig, 24, and his
brother David, 28, were killed in
an accident on Interstate 20
near Weatherford, about 20
miles west of Fort Worth.
The accident occurred at
12:46 a.m., when a semi-trailer
rig, driven by Weldon Gene
Garrett of Arlington, struck the
motor home where Daniel Hel
wig was riding, Department of
Public Safety officials said. The
motor home hit David, who was
skating by the side of the road,
DPS troopers said.
“The motor home was mov
ing behind the skater,” DPS
spokesman David Wells said.
“The truck came over the crest
of the hill and saw the motor
home straddling the strip be
tween the outsiae lane and the
shoulder. The skater was actual
ly traveling in the lane. The
trucker tried to swerve to the left
to avoid striking (the motor
home), then lost control.”
