"All the Right Moves" gives you one more chance to glimpse his boyish good looks, * 1 but forgets to present enough believable storyline for a com plete movie. Cruise is once again in high school, but this time as a football player, Stef, trying to get a col lege scholarship. This seems to be his only chance to get out of his Pennsylvania mining town home. Craig T. Nelson, who played the father in last year's Poltergeist, is his coach, who also is trying to move on with a job on a college team. Both are risking a good deal of their fu tures on the upcoming “big game." The first part of the movie gets the audience acquainted with some of Stef's friends,’ aptly played by newcomers Paul Carofetes and Christopher Penn. Perhaps I am just too cynical about high school, but the little infighting between Stef and his girlfriend just doesn't seem very important. Likewise, a scene with the players dancing in the locker room seems like it was set up to waste time. The basic problem is caused by Cruise and his entire high school situation, which both are Movie Review Lose to perfect as can be. He its to go to college to get an ineering degree, and foot- is the trade-off. To make this ■ious we'see his design jhics on the wall. Sure. Ean his girlfriend had informed i that she wants "sex to be dal, not in a car." And sure ugh, we get the obligatory ecial" scene, with lots of m- se caressing. This isn t lust, i is love. It is not until the football ie is finished that the movie illy gets to the meat of the ryline — the parallels and flicts between Cruise and his ch. Whereas the first half icerned itself with simple hed contests, such as the ne between the poor (under- r) team and the rich (whin- ) team, the latter section of film moves into the com- nity and the deals with "real rid" problems (we're assum- that college IS the real real star throughout all of Craig T. Nelson. His de- i of Coach. Nickerson, is tic and consistent within ily developed character. Although Nickerson is stubborn and uncompromising with his players, he also can be forgiv ing . Cruise does as well as can be expected with his shallow role. Considering that he likes to change his appearance to fit each movie's role, it would have been nice if he covered the pear ly whites a bit. The blame for these problems rests with director Michael Chapman. He shows very little style with the exception of a few creative cuts (the aforemen tioned sex scene cuts into a choir practice). The football game played in sheeting rain is nice, but it's the exception to the rule. With more control over the ac tion, he could have saved the sloppy parts of the film. One thing that could have helped out “All the Right Moves" through the rougher spots was the soundtrack. The instrumental material written by David Campbell gives some solid texture to the football game and shots of the scenery, but the ■songs by Jennifer Warnes, Stephanie-Mills and Junior add absolutely nothing of their own. The only place left for this movie isihehigh school market, and I'm not sure just how many high schoolers will fall for its hodks? Although it's a good film, with the current outcrop ping of. excellent movies in "• town. Cruise and company probably will be.passed over un til they can at least match the fun from "Risky Business." .• , wizard, for several hours, cp EVENING 8:000 O ® BILL: ON HIS OWN Further events in the actual life of Bill Sackter (Mickey Rooney), a retarded man who was taught by young filmmaker Barry Morrow (Dennis Quaid) to live with dignity and independence, are drama tized. ffi BLOOD AND HONOR Hartmut Keller’s increased involvement in the Hitler Youth Movement alien ates his family and friends.
