saying to a group in red, "Hey,
you pay extra to get hassled at
the gate." There had been a
question as to the validity of
their tickets.
When there is a problem with
a fan, the supervisor will step in.
If the problem isn't taken care of,
Fickey is called. The final step is
to take a complaint to Assistant
Athletic Director Wally Groff.
Fickey says that Groff will stand
behind the gatemen in all deci
sions. Kocman agrees that Groff
supports decisions of the
gatemen.
His support is probably one
reason that about 80 percent of
the gatemen stay from year to
year, Fickey says.
Kocman says that despite
problems the gatemen may en
counter, their overall cardinal
rule is to treat everyone fairly.
He remembers a time, long
before the third deck was
added, when the gatemen had
trouble reading tickets because
there were no lights at the gates.
The lights on Kyle Field weren't
bright enough to illuminate the
gate areas, he says. That was ab
out 1952.
Kocman says that once one of
the gateman challenged a man
whom he thought was trying to
gatecrash — the crasher was Ray
George, coach for the Aggie
football team from 1951-53. Af
ter that the gatemen began re
viewing the football programs to
learn the faces of the coaching
staff, he says.
Kocman says he is a gateman
because he wants to help Texas
A&M. The gatemen are paid per
game worked but most, such as
Kocman, do it for Texas A&M
and not for the money, says
head gateman Fickey.
