Gilbert, Manager ( V ' 190t5 Texas A&M has created concern among students about the quali ty of their educations. The re search v. teaching debate is not a new one. But, some professors here seem to think the two areas are indeed balanced. Dr. John C. Adams, assistant professor of English, says that research and teaching are inter related. “It’s not an either-or ques tion,” Adams said. “There are colleges that devote themselves primarily to teaching and there are research institutions. A Uni versity is the whole. It’s purpose is to impart and discover know ledge.” Adams, who is currently working on an anthology of Muster speeches, teaches speech communications and thinks re search carries over into the clas sroom. “To be a good teacher,” Adams said, “you have to be ac tively involved in your field. Re search can be used as illustration in the classroom.” Electrical engineering profes sor John H. Painter says there are dangers in spending too much time in research. “There’s a danger of losing contact with students if you stay out of the classroom too long,” Painter said.
