In order to qualify as a candidate for a degree in the College of Science, each student must
demonstrate an ability to express himself/herself In acceptable English. This requirement
may be satisfied by (1) passing an examination In English composition (EPE) taken not later
than the spring semester of the junior year, or (2) completing English 301 at Texas A&M
University with a minimum grad of "C".
Any student who falls the written examination (EPE) must satisfy the
English Proficiency requirement designated by his/her respective de
partment.
Students tn the Departments of Biology Chemistry, and Mathematics dealring to complete the EPE this
semester or who have a conflict with the designated testing date should see Mrs. Radke. Room 152 A&A
Building Students In the Department of Physics should report to the designated location on the day of testing

AGGIELAND REFUND POLICY
Yearbook fees are refundable in full during the
semester in which paymenbt is made. There
after no refunds will be made or cancelled
orders. Yearbooks must be picked up during
the academic year in which they are published.
Students who will not be on campus when
yearbooks are published, usually in Septem
ber, must pay a mailing and handling fee.
Yearbooks will not be held, nor will they be
mailed without the necessary fees having
been paid.

Texas A&M has created concern
among students about the quali
ty of their educations. The re
search v. teaching debate is not a
new one. But, some professors
here seem to think the two areas
are indeed balanced.
Dr. John C. Adams, assistant
professor of English, says that
research and teaching are inter
related.
“It’s not an either-or ques
tion,” Adams said. “There are
colleges that devote themselves
primarily to teaching and there
are research institutions. A Uni
versity is the whole. It’s purpose
is to impart and discover know
ledge.”
Adams, who is currently
working on an anthology of
Muster speeches, teaches speech
communications and thinks re
search carries over into the clas
sroom.
“To be a good teacher,”
Adams said, “you have to be ac
tively involved in your field. Re
search can be used as illustration
in the classroom.”
Electrical engineering profes
sor John H. Painter says there
are dangers in spending too
much time in research.
“There’s a danger of losing
contact with students if you stay
out of the classroom too long,”
Painter said.
