The majority of Texas’ trans-
ortation research is conducted
uy Texas A&M and the Univer
sity of Texas, he said.
Wootan said land-grant
schools have a responsibility to
provide resources to the state.
Non-land-grant schools do not
have that duty, he said.
Research also provides stu
dents with the opportunity to
work on practical projects that
benefit the state, Wootan said.
Harry Whitmore, associate
director of TEES, says research
in engineering is increasing “be
cause we’re doing things people
want done.”
TEES has recently established
a project that helps inventors
and entrepreneurs, whether in
dividuals or companies, market
their products. The Institute for
Ventures in New Technology
was founded in June.
“We (INVENT) hold our
doors open to everyone and we
particularly like to have faculty
members come in with their
(business) ideas,” said Frank
Sekera, division head of IN
VENT.
Sekera said a four-member
staff reviews and discusses 1,000
ideas and product designs each
year and puts at least 10 pro
ducts on the market.
INVENT, which spends $1
million a year on research, util
izes T exas A&M faculty mem
bers who are experts in a parti
cular field to analyze the market
potential of an invention. An in
vention must have “a high prob
ability of success in its market to
be commercialized,” Sekera
said.

The store owners argue that
once something has been out in
common usage long enough, its
use can no longer be restricted.
In this case, Texas A&M has
been operating since 1876, but
registration of the service marks
did not occur until 1981.
The University claims that
local retailers who sell registered
goods stand to increase their
profit margin, but the retailers
say it isn't so.
Stubbs said because retailers
double their wholesale cost to set
prices for customers, they will
get more profit.
“If a shirt costs $5 to make,"
Stubbs said, “and the royalty lee
is 50 cents, the manufacturer
will charge the retailer $5.50.
Since the retailer can double the
price, the shirt will sell for SI 1
and his profit hasinen
50 cents.
