Counterfeit shirts seized
EL PASO — Thousands of T-
shirts and other products embla
zoned with the names of popu
lar rock goups were siezed by
U.S. marshals Thursday from
two manufacturers who have
been charged with producing
the products in violation of fed
eral trademark laws.
The attorney for the rock
groups, Eldridge Goines of Dal
las, said he discovered the two
firms were also copying Dallas
Cowboy products.
U.S. District Judge Harry Lee
Hudspeth ordered the seizures
from Textile Products Inc., and
the Screen Print Factory. He
placed a restraining order on
the two El Paso companies, pre
venting the continued produc
tion or distribution of the pro
ducts.
The marshalls were ordered
to seize “all goods, products or
articles which displayed the
names, likenesses, symbols,
trademarks or any facsimiles of
the following musical groups:
Grateful Dead, Fleetwood
Mac, Journey, REO Speedwa-
gon, Police, Ozzy Osbourne,
Black Sabbath, Styx, Heart,
Aerosmith, Blue Oyster Cult,
Sarny Hagar, Eddie Money, Ted
Nugent, Tom Petty and the
Hearbre,akers, Santana,
Triumph, ZZ Top and Iron
Maiden.
Goines, the rock groups’
lawyer, said the two companies
have hurt them by infringing on
their exclusive rights to sell and
merchandise the goods.
The Dallas lawyer accompa
nied the marshals to the two
businesses. He said he disco
vered the two companies have
also infringed on the rights of
other businesses as well.
He said he discovered Dallas
Cowboy products, Jack Daniels
T-shirts and Playboy T-shirts
being copied in El Paso.

WASHINGTON — Congress
Thursday approved $650 mil
lion to acquire oil for the Strate
gic Petroleum Reserve and re
duced the daily fill rale to
186,000 barrels in the massive
salt domes in Texas and
Louisiana.
However, the lawmakers eli
minated $370,000 for develop
ment of facilities, including the
Big Hill, site based on the
Reagan administration’s com
mitment to include at least that
amount in next year’s budger re
quest. The Big Hill project is ex
pected to be delayed only nine
months.
The compromise funding
was part of a $v .9 billion Interior
Department spending bill that
received final approval after
bouncing back and forth be
tween the House and Senate on
controversial amendments. The
measure now goes to President
Reagan for his signature.
Negotiators earlier had
wrangled over differences in the
House and Senate versions of
the SPR funding.
The Reagan administration
had wanted to reduce the cur
rent 220,000-barrel daily fill
rate to 145,000 barrels, citing
the need to cut federal deficits.
As of June 30, there were
332.5 million barrels of oil in the
reserve. President Reagan has
set a storage goal of 750 million
barrels.
Congress in 1975 authorized
the SPR to store up to 1 billion
barrels of oil in the under
ground salt domes as a hedge
against a crude oil shortage,
such as another Arab oil embar
go, that could threaten national
security.
The SPR was the subject of
congressional oversight hear
ings early this year in which va
rious management problems
were revealed. Management of
the project has since been trans
ferred to another Department
of Energy office.
Various bills have been intro
duced to change the daily fill
rate and to test the government’s
ability to quickly move pet
roleum out of the reserve in the
event of an emergency.
