Kansas deputy to interview
confessed murderer Lucas
United Press International
TOPEKA — A Shawnee
County sheriffs deputy will in
terview confessed mass killer
Henry Lee Lucas about five
slayings in Kansas as soon as
Lucas’ Texas murder trial is
completed, officials said
Tuesday.
A murder trial for Lucas in
Denton, slated to begin Monday,
was delayed until Nov. 7.
The Topeka Police Depart
ment suspects Lucas in four
slayings, while sheriff deputies
are attempting to establish a link
between the convicted murder
er in two deaths, law enforce
ment officials said. One of the
slayings is being investigated by
both agencies.
Last week, about 100 lawmen
converged on Monroe, La., for a
briefing on Lucas, 47, and Ottis
Elwood Toole, 36, a former
traveling companion of Lucas’.
Maj. Bob Inman and Lt. Tom
Sargent, both of the Shawnee
County Sheriffs Department,
were at the briefing.
Police Lt. Larry Lemon said
police were investigating Lucas
VS 3 I ■
in connection with the 1978
death of Shirley Rose Steiner,
whose body was found near I-
70. He declined to elaborate on
three other deaths that he said
investigators hoped to question
Lucas about.
Lucas claims he has killed
more than 150 women in 17
states since 1975.
